Question about Eleven?

In season 1 when she destroys the monster at the end it makes her disappear, yet in season 2 when she uses her power to close the gate she doesn't disappear, and closing the gate would use more power, did I miss something?

Certainly she is linked somehow to the Upside Down. Maybe she has grown more powerful now, or at least her power is changing.

I don't think they should explain too much yet. It's better if there's some mystery left to the connections between Eleven and the monsters, the Upside Down, and the in-between black void.

I think Eleven’s powers are influenced by her emotional behavior. It would seem that her reactions are intensified when she becomes frightened of angry. We saw another example of this when she loses control of her emotions during the argument with Hopper. I think Kali helped Eleven in this regard by teaching her to gain strength from her anger and use it as a weapon.

When Eleven defeated the monster in Season One I don’t think she had this type of control or a definitive plan. In this scenario I believe her powers were solely influenced by her compassion for her friends. In essence (I believe) she sacrificed herself and I think this was strongly hinted when we see her frantically searching for Mike in the Upside Down, shortly after defeating the monster.

Thank you

I would argue her disappearance had nothing to do with her powers and more to do with what she was using the powers on. We know the demogorgon can create portals from the Upside Down, so it could stand to reason when it was being destroyed it created a temporary one that took Eleven just as it took Will in the shed in episode 1. The gate closing didn't lead her to disappear because it entailed removing the central portal, not creating one.

I thought she mouthed a goodbye to Mike before that final explosion of darkness, suggesting that she was anticipating being lost in the Upside Down, or even killed, as a result of the powers being unleashed in the fight.

She has much more mastery of her powers in S2, especially after training with Kali. And she has the experience of NOT being killed after her initial duel with the demogorgon.

My interpretation of that was she had already just been drained to the point of being barely conscious, and this final effort meant giving all she had left. When she wakes up in the Upside Down, she doesn't seem to me like someone who expected to be there. Rather, she's disoriented, a little panicked, and calling out for Mike. Her saying goodbye seems more like an assumption on her part and something they put in to give closure if the show wasn't coming back. It could also be a remnant of their original limited series idea where she died in this final standoff.
