Not a comedy. And its well-done

A+E Networks senior VP of original movies Tanya Lopez and VP of original movies Arturo Interian:

"TANYA LOPEZ I don’t know if we’ll ever know whether it was a bet from a group of friends or he really wanted to do it…. We weren’t clear if it was going to be authentic, if it really was going to be this murder story…. It’s not a comedy. And it’s well-done."

"ARTURO INTERIAN It’s not the Scary Movie parody of a Lifetime movie. He wanted to legitimately do a Lifetime sexual thriller…. The initial plan was to put on the air with zero fanfare. Just sneak it on. You were going to see promos that were kind of oblique, it’s A Deadly Adoption. A thriller promo. You’re not sure who’s in it. It was interesting that the story leaked and that’s what threw us. We thought we had it under wraps."

reply

I knew it.

You know why? The fact that Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig tried so hard to keep it under wraps. If this were a legitimate comedy, why try so hard to cover it up?

Because it is an embarrassment to their careers, would be my guess.

Exactly. I think they started getting cold feet.

Come on people, you're not being too bright with these comments. This movie is like an internal joke that is being shared for all to see. They, the actors, and everyone know how cheesy a Lifetime movie is and here they use all the tropes that you'd expect from a Lifetime movie and the actors are playing their part perfectly and being well aware of its cheesiness.

Spoken like a pretentious hipster.

Lemme guess what was so "brilliant" about this movie. It was all, like, "meta." Amirite? Hipsters are fond of falling back on the "you didn't get it; it's meta" meme when trying to explain why something that clearly isn't funny or interesting or particularly well done is funny, interesting or brilliant.

It is satire! Meant to be satire. Lifetime Movie lists it as a COMEDY. Watch it again. It is hilarious when you realize it is satire. Read today's reviews all over the internet. IT IS SATIRE. Go to Lifetime channel, find the movie, read the little box description. COMEDY. Period. Jeesh.

I think you should delete this post you sent to me. After you do, I will delete this one. I don't think you are following...

reply

I do think I'm following. You think this movie is a comedy, and I know it's not.

reply

Why does it need to be an embarrassment? They have both done straight, somber roles before, now they are together.

reply

Why does it need to be an embarrassment?

Because Lifetime movies have become synonymous with cheese, and because they can do so much better.

This is so brilliant. There is nothing funnier than 2 brilliant comics doing this kind of thing and not making it a parody or comedy. The punchline is that there is no punchline. Beyond hilarious.

reply

Totally. I think it'll go over many heads. Just look at Andrew Steele's (the writer) credits. The movie is called "A Deadly Adoption" for God's sake. Maybe Lifetime isn't in on the fact that it's a comedy, but that just makes it even better.

Ah, 2 people who don't want to look like idiots. Time to let it go and realize you're terribly wrong.

I can't believe how dumb you are.

reply

Lifetime lists it as a COMEDY. It is in the movie description on my cable listings.

reply

there were a few subversive comedic bits

- Kristen Wiigs' organic/gluten free bakery business
- that groupies exist for the book tour (a financial, Dave Ramsey type of book)
- "Don't Stop Daring"
- Will Ferrell's hair/beard
- The redneck substituting candy bars for insulin
- the obvious bad stunts
- Killing off the the gay best friend
- The dance party at the end

reply

YOU GUYS CAN ALL SUCK IT. In the earlier post "anyone else laughing through the trailer" or whatever it was, I said it's not funny and it's a serious movie and I got such trash. But now you all look like complete idiots. And to the people saying "I knew it" you were probably the people giving me trash.

Hey, crybaby--look at the time stamp. I wrote that "I knew it" comment before this thing even aired, so don't you feel foolish?

Wasn't calling you out.

It's listed as a comedy right here on IMDB (among other places).

reply

Haven't LMN done enough movies about faking a pregnancy for revenge? I hated this movie

reply

Sure, they've done that movie before, but never with A-List comedic talent.

reply

I am a fan of Will and Kristen and I know that have the ability to delve into the serious acting arena. But this movie wasn't it and it was terrible. The ending was horrible and just played out so silly. I wasted 2 hours of my life. :(

reply

they were 2 good hours of my life, pure entertainment and I didn't even felt how fast the time went by even though there were a dozen breaks for commercials..

reply

I think they did it for themselves honestly. I couldn't really take it seriously with them in it but there were times when Will & Kristen weren't in a scene, that I forgot it was a "joke". Not really sure of there intention but I thought it was kind of interesting.. I mean, it was a movie on lifetime for free. Maybe I'd feel differently if I paid for it in a theater but I knew what to expect

By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes.

reply

I don't really get the part with "take it seriously". I think they did great and the movie was well made.

I just meant that when Will Ferrell and Kristen Wigg weren't in a scene, it felt like a real lifetime movie, so I could get lost in the story a little more. But when they were in a scene together, I couldn't really escape that they were both on SNL, Anchorman 2, etc.I kept expecting comedy.

By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes.

reply

they can't control what the public expects of them. You just have to keep an open mind to what their doing in the moment and the context of which they work in. You'll know when they're doing a comedy or a parody as the situation will make you laugh.

Because of the scene in which Sarah kills the crazy girl in behind, which was a surprise shot, I kept expecting someone to start shooting them all in the last scene, they were dancing but because of that previous scene I kept expecting something bad to happen, more of a thriller feeling.

reply

i read am interview from the v.p.'s of lifetime movies saying that this is not a comedy and it is well done whatever that means.i saw saw it on the entertainment weekly web site.i feel both will ferrell and kristen wriig have range.

reply

It is totally "the Scary Movie of a Lifetime movie."

Secret tip/word to the wise? The final scene. 

Look at the writer's body of work. YHBT :)

Look at the writer's body of work.

This, if nothing else.

The guy is exclusively writing comedy material, and also did "Casa de mi Padre" with Ferrell, which you might remember is kind of the same concept as this. It's not really played as a comedy; the whole premise is the absurdity of Will Ferrell and everyone else speaking Spanish and being telenovella style dramatic. I'm not sure I really think it's very funny (once the initial chuckle at the concept is over), but if you don't understand that it's at least definitely meant as a joke, I can only hope you're not registered to vote.

IMDb-boards would be less confusing if people would mark their signatures clearly.

reply

Ha! As if being registered to vote yields any sort of power in the first place. Don't be brainwashed by the government overlords.
