In the novel that Edward has written, the incident at the highway was really disturbing in that he feels so powerless to stop the thugs from touching and taking his wife and daughter.
What are some ways of defending ourselves in a similar situation?

shareThe 3 bad-guys were just normal sized guys. And the leader was standing right in front of the good-guy (Tony/Edward) with his hands down. Tony did right to act scared to get the other guy's guard down....but then he should have hauled-off and sucker-punched him. He could have knocked him out. Then there's only 2 bad-guys left. Tony fights 1....and the 2 girls fight the other guy, hoping to delay him for a minute, and hoping that Tony can win his fight quickly. The odds are still against them, but there's at least a chance.

shareTo actually answer the TCs question, when getting out and to open the trunk to get out the spare for them, I would have wielded that tire iron like King Arthur wielded the Excalibur and dented fool who tried to get near me or the fam. Or those Mom and Daughter should have grabbed some stones to throw when they out of the car and off the road. Maybe they wouldn't stand a chance against them but it's better to go down fighting than the alternative.
Better yet, I would not have honked or tried to pass in the first place. If someone is obviously being antagonistic on the road, especially in the middle of nowhere, it 's better to just ignore them and keep your distance because they are obviously someone who has lost a few marbles.
I would have done anything. Aything. Sure, maybe I would have been killed but atleast died trying. I mean he was literally behind the guy several times whilst the other 2 were working on the car, do you know how fast you can make someone loose consciousness by choking? You'd be amazed, its not like in the movies when they struggle for 20 second and they still have power left to fight. after 2 seconds your gonna be like a goddamn noodle. I would also try to twist his neck so hard I could in any way to badly hurt him to make the fight 1v2. As for the other 2 guys I would kick, bite, rip their eyes out, Anything if necessary.
Another option would be to kick him so hard you could in the balls from behind. Imagine channeling all you strenght into a massive well aimed kick.
Is it just me that get so frustrating wacthing scenes like this when the guy does nothing?? He doesnt even try. Imagine just biting someone in the throat or like fingers as hard as you can i mean to the point that your teeth will break.
I also feel this way, but the thing is its easy to talk about doing anything and while I hope that I would be able to do anything, I think if I did end up in a situation like that (heaven forbid) I would probably end up being the same way Tony was.

yeah - no, the choking maneuver really works only if your opponent is really tired/or doesn't know how to defend himself. When you have 3 opponents, choking people is not an option - you have to strike - and even when striking, each strike has to be the ending kind - poke their eyes, punch their throat, break their fingers - incapacitate each attacker with each strike/attack - you don't have the luxury of time or strategy - you have to decrease the number of attackers with each strike, or they will eventually surround you and overcome your defenses from behind.

There's no way they would have gotten me and my family out of that car without a fight. He should have rolled the windows up and locked the doors. The guys didn't have guns. I would have waited until they got tired of kicking at the outside of my car and moved on to harass somebody else. They would have had to bust the windows out to drag me and my family out of the car. By then I would have known for certain that they planned to hurt or kill us and I would've told my family to fight against them at all costs.

The thing is, I was googling for another story - that story was much more similar to the one in this movie - that is, it wasn'tin downtown, there were no people - and the family got beaten down badly, without anyone to stop the bikers.
In this story - and i can't find the new article now - the car also stopped. Only it stopped without anyone blocking it.
The point being, you should never stop your car, unless you are surrounded by a lot of people who will interfere if there is a beatdown. You should never stop a car if you are the only dude in the car with your wife/daughter - and the other car has a bunch of pissed off dudes/or biker situation. Drive - do not stop, until you get to a safe place - ride over any biker that interferes. KEEP YOUR FAMILY SAFE! DO NOT STOP! Even ending up in prison is better than having your family beaten/raped.
That's what I've learned from reading these news articles.
