The spider scenes seemed out of place

Suddenly she's got dozens of full grown spiders crawling on her body when she's sleeping?! That just seemed to come out of nowhere and how was it part of the plot? Yeah, at the end of the movie she's ready to leave the shed - were the spiders supposed to be part of what leads her there? Just seemed out of place - am I not understanding something?
