While Black Panther and Captain Marvel seem like no-brainers in today's film industry, Disney CEO Bob Iger had a tough time getting them off the ground.

In his memoir The Ride of a Lifetime, Iger explained that he had to overcome the outdated beliefs of Marvel Entertainment CEO Ike Perlmutter, who was worried that fans would not want to see films that focus on black and female superheroes.

The results speak for themselves. Both Black Panther and Captain Marvel went on to gross over $1 billion at the box office, while Black Panther nabbed a Best Picture nomination from the Academy Awards.

Marvel Phase 4 kicks off with Black Widow, opening in theaters on May 1, 2020. It will be followed by The Eternals opening on Nov. 6, 2020, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings opening on Feb. 12, 2021, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness opening on May 21, 2021, an untitled Spider-Man sequel opening July 16, 2021, and Thor: Love and Thunder opening Nov. 5 2021.

I read that and I find it quit interesting that Ike Perlmutter is being cast as the ultimate villain by attempting to practice some fiscal responsibility. If you look at how quickly production budgets along with actor salaries have burgeoned under Feige you'd have to at least give some thoughts to unsustainability. When Marvel initially negotiated a deal with (Merrill-Lynch?) for $575 Million, $200 Million dollar budgets were not in the formula. The Tv and Netflix sides of the business aren't given these huge budgets to use as their financial playground and it became hard to co-exist let alone compete with the film side.

The optics look good in that Marvel/Disney is sharing the wealth with the talent but it can't go on at this pace for too long. Eventually Ike will probably have a smile on his face when the financial growth rocket flattens out as everything does eventually. Marvel/Disney and investors can't realistically be automagically expecting +Billion dollar movies for most of the Phase 4 movies. Will they be profitable? Yes. Investors tend to want to see growth and other than that they see stagnation.
