Even the James Bond films were closer to the original novels

So there's a character called Dirk Gently and he's a holistic detective. And that's it.

Why not call it something else and save the licensing fees? Or did the BBC still have the rights from the earlier version and decided to get some more mileage out of them?

reply

Exactly. I'd have been happy with sequal-type stories if the character had been true to the original. Unfortunately, it's not even close. The book's Dirk Gently is intelligent, observant, clever (and yes, rude and self-centred) and knows exactly what he is doing and why. The character in the TV show is none of these things. In fact, he's nearly the exact opposite character in every way. Perhaps that's part of the joke.

I guess it's not unlike the distance between Conan Doyle and Elementary. No resemblance to the original stories, but potentially still entertaining.

This is nothing new. The Jason Bourne movies with Matt Damon use the titles and the names of a few of the characters, and not much else from the novels, but the movies are hugely successful because they are entertaining. If you want to see something close to the books, watch the original movie "the bourne identity" with Richard Chamberlain from 1988.

Regardless, it's still a GREAT series, and I can't wait for its return!

Schrodinger's cat walks into a bar and doesn't.

because while quite different to the source material it absoltely nails the idea.

It offers more of a Adams vibe than his own adaptation did. It might be the best use of an Adams idea in modern television to date.

...but they hung him anyway.
Hanged, Ami. Your father was not a tapestry.

didnt you pay attention to this thread? Therefdotcom is the only person worthy to judge how much this show is faithful to the style and ideas of adams.
how can you doubt his inerrable taste :D

that's actually true.

So what!

And what about the bond stories that were not written by Fleming.

Actually I disagree about the Bond. The glamour in almost all the movies far outweighs the books which are generally quite gritty and grimy. Though to be fair I did read them when I was 10, 40 years ago.

Yeah, I get what the "people who don't like the series" are talking about. It's not the exact characters nor are the story-lines based around these said characters...except for the "Dirk Gently" part (and a little bit of the "holistic" part). But yeah, if they were to do an exact rundown of the books themselves, that wouldn't have pleased a large percentage of the audience as well. And also, the creators would have no way to explore their own creativity or ideas (kinda like how the "Sherlock" series did) within the limited realms of the universe (limited to the books, I mean) they were going to explore.

But they took off on a tangent, an offshoot of the ideas and the universe Adams left behind. And while it might not work for everyone, it wasn't intended to in the first place. I am sure they knew about this when they first pitched their idea for this series, and still went ahead with it knowing that they are still honoring D.A. through their "interpretation" of his works and not everyone is going to be pleased.

Having said that, I would love to see someone recreate the books (or any book for that matter, LOTR being the striking example), but also feel really glad that someone is trying to expand on his universe, and in a pretty good manner.

There are obvious references to other cases of Dirk Gently through out the season and it is very clear that Dirk is still finding his feet through out the episodes, and maybe it'll give us one of the very famous novels in such a way as to totally capture the magic of his aura, his character. But to put down a totally fine effort by the creators and the production team seems a bit harsh right now, considering that it was only the first season.

Hey, maybe it was the Dirk Gently's prologue that we needed, or also not. Either way, it's a pretty damn good thing to happen.

the 2012 series did exactly that.

"But they took off on a tangent, an offshoot of the ideas and the universe Adams left behind."

only that it has 0% adams in it.

"But to put down a totally fine effort by the creators and the production team seems a bit harsh right now, considering that it was only the first season. "

it's a cash in on the name, not a "fine effort".

they should have simply called it something like "the hollistic" and call it "INSPIRED by the works of douglas adams".

reply

it's the Douglas Adams name they wanted right?
