Movie sustantiates a lot of jewish stereotypes

Im watching this movie as a,middle age jewish adult. I have always known my family and other jewish friends to be generous with their money. However, this, movie ,by emphasizing madoff·S jewishness may promote some antisemitism..it is very well acted though. Any comnents regarding this issue...jewish or non jewish contributors may respond

I hate that stereotype as well. I hate anyone being marginalized.

Every Jewish person I have known are very generous. My aunt married a Jewish man and growing up this uncle was like a father to me. Helped my husband and I years ago buy a house and a car.

I grew up staying many many Jewish people. More than a couple jokes it was their guilt complex making them do it. One neighbor joked to another neighbor, "I've got your Catholic guilt, on steroids, and two thousand years more mature."

As a middle aged non jewish person, I didn't think about this show stereotyping jewish people. It just happens to be that he is.

What I took away, so far is, this is what happens when greed grips someone's soul. How it torments, how he was living in constant fear of being discovered as a fraud, and his inner demons as he wants to protect and provide for his family, even to the point of having his sons slowly turn against him.

I find this whole story fascinating. The show, not bad at all, Richard is doing a great job.

Iamthetopp, I saw the series or show in the very same way. Add to the portion that there was an element of human savvy, which Bernie (whether he was Jewish or not) was fantastically good at using and spotting, to the very core of his fraud.

His greed and cover-up ate away at any legitimate portion or element of his make up and his foundation eventually crumbled.

The observations about people and human nature was the best part. You can learn that whether you are Jewish or not. Some people never learn it whether they are Jewish or not.

I'm not Jewish but I don't think it portrays Jewish people as a whole in a bad light. There have been many ponzi schemes and it's not like the only perpetrators or victims have only been Jewish. If anyone feels like the only people involved are Jewish it just shows their arrogance. The most generous boss I ever had was Jewish. He put all other bosses to shame.

I am not Jewish but about halfway through the movie my kids & I were like "wow, this seems antisemitic."
Why? Because the way it is narrated for starters.
I thought they were using quotes from Madoff himself, but actually they were quoting a book written by Brian Ross. (The Madoff Chronicles)
And when he went to Florida to find new people to con, they could have left it at that. Instead they made it clear to point out that the would be (greedy) investors were Jewish.
He did scam people of all race, creed, and religions- so why does the film focus so much on Jewish people? IDK.
Doesn't greed/pride affect every race/creed/religion? Is it not part of the human condition worldwide?

I know this is where I'm supposed to insert or quote a movie, but why do people on IMDB message boards do that?

reply

Its not stereotyping if it is true.
Madoff was a rich Jewish crook who targeted, in particular, other wealthy Jews and played on their greed. He was an equal opportunity thief, ruining the lives of many others including many who did not have he means to recover like some of Bernie's more well healed frieds such as the Wilpons (Only Met fans truly suffered, but that is another story)

If you want to say that Madeoff makes Jew look bad, I would say no more than any other demographic. You could find similar rich Protestant or Catholic schemers who played on wealthy members of their community and were indifferent to the harm they caused. Ken Lay of Enron comes to mind.

Greed is the weak link in humanity that con men take advantage of and Jews are as succeptable to this fault as anyone, but no more.

It's not like Madoff lopped off any heads or immolated anybody.

reply

No, but he stole the retirement funds of many people including the pension money of firemen and municipal workers.

Not nice.

Worse, he forced the Mets to keep a low payroll.
Wait! That also forced the Mets to develop young players and has made them a contender.

Out of bad, comes good after all.
