Did anyone else feel sorry for Lee? SPOILERS

He didn't mean to Kill his Kids. It was a mistake that could have happened to anyone

You're right - but why feel sorry for a surly self-pitying alcoholic a-hole who punches out strangers in bars? Maybe he could try doing some good in the world rather than being a miserable SOB

reply

He's Miserable cause he's punishing himself.

He wanted to do good but his guilt has consumed him

reply

He wanted to do good . . .

What are the signs of his do-gooding impulse? His blinks, grunts or punching strangers?

reply

I feel very sorry for him. A terrible thing happened, a tragedy, pretty much caused by him. He couldn't get past it.
Some people have terrible things happen to them, because of their own doing or not, and some of them can deal with it and others can't. Lee couldn't.

reply

If you have small children you should take more care instead of drinking too much alcohol and smell cocaine.

reply

Yes, my Dad nearly died by leaving the frying pan on and falling asleep

reply

Yes, I did feel sorry for him. Not in a pity sense but in feeling his pain. He made some poor choices which turned out to have extremely tragic consequences. He didn't downplay or justify what he did. In fact, in the scene at the police station, he seemed horrified that there would be no legal repercussions and immediately grabbed a gun to try to kill himself. Then he basically stopped living and punished himself by working a dead-end job and cutting himself off from other people.

His anger was entirely believable, too. I've noticed that many, many people turn hurt into anger almost immediately so it didn't surprise me that he occasionally erupted.

His brother knew what he was doing when he named him as Patrick's guardian. That forced him back into the land of the living, with people he cared about. Then he began slowly, slowly, slowly to move toward healing.

reply

Yes, very. Extremely good acting, I felt the weight he was carrying, and it was almost unbearable to watch that scene where his ex wife was trying to talk to him. The pain smacked me in the face.

reply

Same here!

reply

I wept openly, and pretty hard.

It could not have happened to anyone. He is an alcoholic (he could not even watch TV at 2AM without going out for some more beer) and also did coke. He burned his house down while high and drunk.

Btw, the movie claimed that Patrick's mother was unacceptable choice to take care of Patrick because she was drunk. Lee even said that the judge would never let that happen. What was she supposed to have done that was so horrible, except passing out half naked? She seems to be sober now, while Lee is still drinking and getting into fights when drunk. Why would a judge let him be the guardian, and not the mother? Makes no sense, unless there is more to her that wasn't really revealed in the movie.
