Do people even remember the original?

I know it was a huge hit back in 2002 but no one really quotes it anymore and, if someone were to ask who was in the movie, I'm sure most people would be rushing to their phones to answer that question.

It just doesn't seem like it has any staying power, so what's really the point of making a sequel 14 years later?

I've been a member of this site before the first one even came out 14 years ago, so yeah, I remember it.

Funny movie, will watch the sequel and not make too much fuss about it.

It's a comedy, not an academy award nominee wannabe.

"You no eat meat"?? "That's okay, I make you lamb". Loved this movie, saw it 3 times in one week when it first came out.

"Vulgarity is no substitute for wit".

I watch it most of the times it's on tv. I hope the sequel lives up to the original.

Beans are evil. Bad, bad beans.

OP, not everyone is 20 years old and brain dead and has to turn to their phones to look up a movie.

No, but sadly many people nowadays even in their 30s and 40s still rush to the phone and look things up at the drop of a hat with less social skills and interaction. I get what they were saying even if many people here really do remember the movie as the other posts have shown. It did gain steam for many weeks in 2002 and then scored big in the home market.

The half season 2003 CBS sitcom version of it -- now that was a bomb!

So: a realistic, down to earth show..which is completely off the wall swarming with magic robots?!

Loved the original back in the day. I follow boxoffice trends, and I remember this started small. It was supposed to be this quickie independent feature that quickly spread like wildfire and became this sleeper boxoffice runaway hit.

It was truly a sensation, boxoffice and story wise.

But they never really capitalized on it.

The tv show came and went because it supposedly wasn't very well written, and the sequel is coming way too late in my opinion, but I hope I'm wrong.

Apparently there IS an audience for the sequel, just not you.

I remembered it and I LOVED it! I do want to see this, but I will wait to see how the ratings go based on the average consumer and not critics.

I watch it all the time. Love it :)

What a question...

We watch it (the DVD) quite often and always enjoy doing so.

We constantly quote from it in our everyday conversations.

And I'm confident that we're not the only ones.

reply

I do. And I liked it.

I'm so glad they did this while they still had all of the original cast. Especially Michael Constatine. He's wonderful. Paired with Lainie Kazan they are perfect. I can't believe Bess Meisler is still around for the sequel but I imagine they made her up older than she really is.

I also imagine this was a lot of fun for the cast to do. Especially if they enjoyed working together on the first one, which it looked like they did, this was like a real family reunion.

I would be fine with them doing a third one in 3-5 years so Paris could have a wedding. If they wait too much longer they are going to start losing cast members.

I remember it, and I remember really liking it.

But I also remember that the first one was about 15 years ago (actually, 14), not 17 or 18, so I was wondering how the couple could now have a kid ready to enter college. Sorry if it is a nitpick, and the sequel was a good story but maybe it would have been interesting too to see Paris as a high school freshman or sophomore.

But yes, it's great that they did this sequel while the original cast were all still around to do it. Nia Vardalos doesn't look like she's aged over 10 years since the last one!
