Masterpiece

Mesmerising film about the turmoil involved in a marriage. The setting, the acting, the cinematography are all wonderful. The different relationships between the characters are compelling, I especially love the scenes with Roland and the Barman.

I think it's fair to say that the art of films these days has been completely lost on the general viewer. This is pure art at its finest. Most reviews on here criticising the film are from people who haven't seen it and the rest from people without the capacity to understand its beauty and genius.

Hats off to Angelina. Fantastic.

People hate it because they can't relate but as a person who struggles with depression and has been in a relationship for 13 years this movie feels close to the heart.

Also despite what everyone says we can all agree that the movie was beautifully shot.

I have finally seen this film and I can say: stay away from all the people who have talked so badly about it!

It is a very nice film but not easy and not for everyone: I mean, you need to know and to feel what a relationship is like to undertsand and appreciate this film.

Besides, it is beautifully shot and the players act very well, mostly Brad ( IMO) and the story is intriguing.

I really liked this film. I liked the trailer, but was put off watching it because of all the bad reviews.

But, I really, really liked it. Sure there is some clunky dialogue near the start (intentional?) and it could have shaved off a little of the runtime, but Jolie's direction, the cinematography and music were the particular highlights of this film. Pitt and Jolie do very well in their respective roles - in fact, all of the acting is quite good.

Not perfect, but mostly stunning work!

I believe Netflix starts showing By the Sea Tuesday. Hopefully many others will finally get to experience this brilliant film and see what A$$holes the critics are.

After Aniston's film "Crack", we know now for a fact, critics can be bought.

Both Darghis & RIchard Brody gave it a thumbs up. I feel this is a better movie especially because the critics from tabloids and small newspapers "didn't get it".

I think the word masterpiece is overused these days but I agree with everything else that you wrote OP. Well put together and fine acting. My respect for Jolie as a director has gone up after watching this.

I'm going to see "By the Sea" tomorrow, and I have high hopes. I absolutely loved Jolie's film "Land of Blood & Honey," and would never guess that this was not a European production. "By the Sea" looks similar, and by descriptions of it being "slow" I imagine this too has a European style to it as well. I can tell by the trailer alone that the cinematography will be wonderful, and the 1970's fashions as well. And it will also be interesting to see Brad Pitt in a serious role again. i can't remember the last time he made a serious film; everything he has starred in has been so silly lately. As a foreign film addict (my favorite director being Luchino Visconti) i think i will like this one very much. Really looking forward to it..

There should be a law forbidding the making of rotten movies like this. What a stinker. And to think they wasted $10 million making this bore.

I like many of her other movies, but unfortunately I really disliked this one.
