Masterpiece

Mesmerising film about the turmoil involved in a marriage. The setting, the acting, the cinematography are all wonderful. The different relationships between the characters are compelling, I especially love the scenes with Roland and the Barman.

I think it's fair to say that the art of films these days has been completely lost on the general viewer. This is pure art at its finest. Most reviews on here criticising the film are from people who haven't seen it and the rest from people without the capacity to understand its beauty and genius.

Hats off to Angelina. Fantastic.

I completely agree with you. This is pure art. Her direction was the best part. She should be proud and take more risks like this one. Now I must say that I cant wait for Father.

You guys are taking the piss!

I will see it when it comes in my country, really looking forward to it.

It is a stunning film.A visionary work.

I agree 100%. My personal opinion...people who deride Angelina Jolie-Pitt's work do so because of jealousy. She is a very unique and gifted individual. Beautiful, talented and a consummate writer and director. A bit too much for most mortals to accept. As for By the Sea, as mentioned before, a simple story told with such beauty and attention to detail. The acting, writing, setting & cinematography are flawless. Perhaps as another person mentioned, today we are inundated with so much technology that we cannot appreciate such a simple story told so compellingly. So reminiscent of 60's Cinemoi. Kudos to Angie.

If this were a video or art work, yes, but it doesn't work as film, not even as introspective. It lags too much, no plot (my God when she stretch out on that chair and "discovered" the hole in the wall, I had had enough) Were there no other way to move the story forward..., a vapid storyline, and horrible acting-Everytime Brad spoke he sounded like a actor portraying a french man he has seen in a movie, Angelina's Vanessa should have been cast, she doesn't have the depth for this. The dialogue is the worst. Not a good Film.

It wasn't perfect, but I agree with most of what you said. It was a beautiful little film.

reply

“A beautiful little film”? What, like a highly-polished turd?

reply

Agree, I don't think the movie is a "Masterpiece", but is not trash, I enjoyed it, I gave it a 7, seen worst movies lately, like "Knight of cups", watching that is a waste of time and money

reply

To be honest, I tried watching it and was bored within the first 10 minutes and switched off but that's how I am with most art-house films. I will have to save this one for a rainy day. I'm not knocking it because I haven't seen the entire movie, I just need to prepare myself in order to get into it.

:) nice to see almost veryone making fun of this film.
Yes, it was that boring. Such great actors, such bad movie.

reply

Sometimes what's boring to some is a slow burn to others. Actually this movie doesn't really interest me but maybe on a rainy day when I'm bored and there's nothing to watch, I'll see if I can get into it.

So, I'll save it for a rainy day. :)

Haven't seen the film yet, but I concur - this is the best film of the decade.

LOL. I am confused at how anyone could think masterpiece.

The entire plot could be shot in 15 min let alone 2 hours.

So much of this film could be cut to make it smoother but it drags and drags to get to the conclusion.

Here is a tip. Watch the first 15 min, then skip to the 50min mark or so... watch another 15min.... then skip to the last 20 min.

I agree Ales, nothing happened through out the whole movie. 1 of the most boring movies I have ever seen. I knew not to bother watching it but I read this thread and gave it a try. What a horrible non entertaining movie.

ITA. This was the worst film I have ever seen. The only decent acting was from the french actors. There were more words spoken in Pitt’s awful Chanel ads than in this pile of crap. All Jolie did was pout and exhale...and pout again and exhale again. And the following may be a spoiler.....but for a woman who tries so hard to appear to be a champion of all women shouted to Pitt that she was in such a bad emotional state because “I’m barren!” My mother was a Gynaecologist in the seventies and would have been disgusted if anyone uttered such an offensive word.
The movie had no redeeming qualities and God knows why she chose to flash her breast enlargements to the world.
And this film won’t ever become a cult movie. Cult movies have a certain charm that makes them watchable. This movie ain’t watchable.
I have always loved arthouse movies and world cinema. This film isn’t good enough for either description. And the critics were right. This was one big turd, rolled in glitter and sold as the *cough* sexy movie follow up to Mr and Mrs Smith. It was *beep*

Have to agree. I am watching it now, but only because of Francois - who is more charming than Brad Pitt. Otherwise nothing is happening and I a at the 3/4 mark, which is HIGHLY frustrating. I thought at least Angeliena would have had some affair with Francois.

Otheriwse very shallow script, awful acting by Pitt + Jolie (it almost feels like they are forcing themselves to portray these roles).

The setting is the only other positive aspect of the movie (besides Francois being #1).

The movie had no redeeming qualities and God knows why she chose to flash her breast enlargements to the world.

Yip - I found that strange true. It was surely a statement from her end, as if to prove to the world that she is a fighter. OMG - can she be anymore of a showoff?

The Production studio should have given the 10m to a way more serving Director who can and actually make a decent movie to watch.

Hollywood needs to learn from the French cinema. 99% of the crap which has been produced by Americans (including this one which is a major absoultely nothing besides nice scenery), is a complete waste of time and money to watch.

Maybe - but the character is allowed to describe HERSELF however she likes; she wasn't referring to anybody else...

I never saw it being sold as 'sexy', either.

Masterpiece no.

Was impressed by her direction though. Looked glorious.
