Critics afraid to pan Meryl Streep!

Mara Renstein is one of those politically correct critics who is afraid to pan Meryl Streep. Here is an actual quotation (quite embarrassing): "Criticizing a Meryl Streep performance is kind of like disparaging a Pablo Picasso painting."

Really? You are actually going to put Meryl Streep in the same sentence with the greatest painter of the 20th century? News flash to Mara Renstein: Meryl Streep is not a great artist. In fact, she has never done anything creative in her entire life other than look pretty while reading lines that other people wrote for her.

Furthermore, I think that there are a lot of actors who are better than Meryl Streep. For example, take Sean Penn, Gary Oldman and Daniel Day-Lewis. Unlike Streep, all three of these actors are actually able to change their appearance from role to role. In contrast, Meryl Streep just always looks like Meryl Streep. Did I mention the fact that Gary Oldman and Sean Penn (not sure about Daniel Day-Lewis) have successfully written and directed movies? Now there is something that is way over Meryl Streep's head.

By the way, in case you accuse me of being an old sexist pig who hates older actresses, I should point out that I am a young woman myself.

Here is the ridiculous review right here:

The problem with your criticism of Meryl - "All she does is look pretty while reciting lines that other people wrote" - is that it over-simplifies the art of acting. What about showing emotional range, for example?

You could also make the same statement about any other actor. True, there are actor-directors out there, but not all of them are absolute masters of the craft of acting. Spike Lee gives himself supporting roles in many of his movies, but he is always outshone - at least ON the screen - by his co-stars. You would have a very hard time arguing that he is just as good an actor as he is screenwriter-director.

you provide nothing respectable nor feasible to an argument in your case. this is why people aren't taking you seriously. provide evidence to how you think is she isn't deserving of her title as the greatest actress of our days. provide a better degree of restraint in your own personal disgust of the topic and above all ENGAGE people in an OPEN DISCUSSION.

no one likes to be yelled at. i'm sure its happened to you before and this is why you feel it the only way to communicate online with other people. you add nothing to the board, the site or anything by acting the way you are.

You say that "people" aren't taking me "seriously" in the second sentence of your post. If this is the case, then why are you taking time to respond to something I wrote over a year ago? My arguments are clearly worth YOUR time.

By the way, can you be more specific about why my arguments (look at my first post to see what they are) are neither "feasible" nor "respectable." Trying to make accusations against me that my arguments are not "respectable" is an example of an ad hominem attack on your part. Do you know what that means? Rather than directly engaging in a debate, you haul around insults implying that I am not "respectable" as a person.

It sounds like your real issue is with the CRITIC who said that about Meryl. And there is certainly more to acting that just 'looking pretty while reciting lines'. For example, there is the huge task of memorizing lines (which is even harder for live theatre, which Meryl has done). And surely her time in the Yale School of Drama must have given her a solid foundation in the arts?

I disagree - to me she definitely changed her appearance in -

MUSIC OF THE HEART

THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA

Probably a few more I'm not coming up with right now. I will agree she didn't 'change' in Ricki though - the movie sucked!

Also, Sean Penn's good, sure disagree he's better than Streep.
