Is it at all plausible even in this type of movie that the whole neighbourhood went away?

And therefore no witnesses around could be in order to help Evan if need be, how did the whole neighbourhood at the same time like that manage to go away or on holiday or be out for a pub etc and no one staying say in those homes even if one family member went etc?

Given even a lot of other factors around this film happening, did this part bother anyone, was it even explained how they got to that stage or was it a totally implausible and ridiculous goof?
