It's basically brainwashing, shame, aversion therapy and bible verses mixed up with flat-out child abuse aimed at taking a gay kid and forcing him into a heterosexual mold. It doesn't work, it's considered torture by most who have been through it and most who know what all it entails, and it's one of the least "Christian" things that Christians have come up with since the Inquisition.
