Left handed

Is Bosch ambidextrous? As I noticed that he writes with his left hand but wears his gun and holster on his right hip? Or is it a continuity error?

reply

I honestly don`t know but I am left handed and even though I write with my left hand I do pretty much anything else with my right hand...

reply

I also have that quirk where I do different things with different hands. Throw and box with my left, everything else with my right.

reply

I am not ambidextrous but I write with right and fight southpaw. Well..I've not been in a fight in nearly a couple decades, but I remember well. I also carry heavy stuff with my left--like if carrying two bags of groceries and one is heavier, it is assigned to the left.

I know many people, my friends as well, that are right handed and are playing golf/hockey left handed. Its not uncommon.

I think it will be a great inconvenience for Bosch to have a specifically modified weapon because he is left handed while in the army and same about his police gun.

reply

I don't consider myself ambidextrous but I masturbate with my right hand and when I feel like cheating I use my left hand. That way one hand doesn't know what the other hand is doing.

A lot of left handers use our right hands for more physical, less detailed tasks. I write left handed but open doors, play with my phone, pick up things, etc with my right hand. Society conditions us to do many tasks right handed simply because it's a right handed world. It's easier for us to adapt and fairly common for lefties. I Titus is left handed in real life, so I imagine this is something he does IRL. He discusses it here: http://www.dinnerpartydownload.org/titus-welliver/

Guns are basically designed for right-handed users. Although you can shoot "lefty", it is just not ideal. Any type of weapon that discharges a spent shell will eject that shell from the right side of the weapon. So if you imagine looking down the barrel of a rifle, you'd be better off shooting right-handed. If you do shoot lefty, the shell casings actually eject across your field of vision. It can be done, but it's less than ideal.

Bosch has military training, so it's not shocking he has learned to handle weapons as a "righty". That would just be better in the long-run for someone that handles weaponry, especially as those weapons are designed and intended for right-handed people.

Also - you are taught to shoot a rifle/gun to your dominant eye, not your dominant hand. If Bosch is right eye dominant, the military/academy would train him to shoot with his right hand. It doesn't really matter which hand you write with.

Check out S2E10 during the gunfight, Bosch pretty clearly is shooting right handed but left eye dominant FWIW.

The TV series has encouraged me to read the books again starting at the beginning.
In the first chapter of The Black Echo [1992 ]Bosch gets a call from HQ to investigate a dead body. He gets his nylon holster and his 8 shot 9mm Smith and Wesson with the XTP expanding ammunition [which I assume means hollow point] and positions it on his right side so he can draw it with his left hand.

From what I remember from reading all the Bosch books he is left handed. But they could have changed it for TV or for Titus or any number of reasons or for no reason at all.

I am left-footed, but I can kick a football almost equally well with my right foot.

I also write left-handed and shoot right-handed. We’re a rare breed but we do exist.

I knew a guy who was right-handed, but when he committed suicide he shot himself in the left side of his head, while holding the gun in his left hand. So, in any cop movie, when they say an apparent suicide is obviously murder because the guy was right-handed but was shot in the left side of the head, it's just BS.

This is pretty minor, but I had a job for many years where I had to tax my right arm a lot. When I lost that job, after a while my right elbow started to ache, just when I was learning to mouse a computer. It hurt to move the mouse !
So I switched to mousing LH, and whenever some instructor would try a help me with some computer task, they'd say they forgot I am LH. I'm not ! Mousing is almost the only thing I do with my Left.
