I'm confused...

About Smithers political leanings (By today's standards). On one hand, he calls Ruth a Hyena because of job of bringing in fugitives to be hung, which implies he's against the whole thing. It's a liberal mindset. On the other other hand, his blatant use of the N-Word, not respecting Major Warren's title as Major, and the slaughtering of the black troops would imply that he's the Conservative "Murican" "Let's make this country great again" Faketriot flag waving type.

What? You're just projecting your own assumptions here. I don't find anything unusual about a military man who's used to chain of command and the authority of government despising a bounty hunter, who's akin to mercenary - his loyalties being bought with cash rather than honor.

reply

Well...I wrote it. It's more of a observation than assumption. I detect some anger in your response, even though you just gave some mindless rambling outline on my comment. Who would dispise someone bringing a murderer in for just? And, do you honestly think that someone should do the job for free???

reply

Did you watch the damn movie? Don't remember what Jody told him? And honestly go get some anger management.

reply

Remembee he was ordered by Jody to not talk to John Ruth as part of the deal... It could have been just an excuse to not wish to speak to him

reply

That doesn't explain his conversation with Mannix. They were talking for a while.

reply

You are reading too much into Smither's interaction with Ruth. It could have been due to the deal he made with Jody (I believe the interaction took place before the arrival of Mannix and Warren which made the whole deal difficult to keep as both knew who he was - it's hard to ignore someone for days when they know who you are).

Smithers may have genuinely disliked Ruth because Ruth may have take some former soldiers to hang or war criminals that weren't pardoned to hang. We really don't know and what would be considered a liberal or conservative in 1870 can't easily be determined using criteria from 2017.

You're rationalization means nothing if your claims weren't implied in this film. You didn't honestly think that I would take that nonsense seriously, did you?

reply

I don't find it surprising. He seems to have a big ego about his rank of general, and likely values the legitimate soldier. It's even enough to allow Warren to sit and talk with him once he accepts that they shared a battle field. That's a big deal for him because he's a racist *beep* who refused to speak to him at first. So I think he sees a bounty hunter as an illegitimate law man or soldier in a way, and he resents that.

Also, I don't see him as a 'patriot' whether real or fake. I think he's a confederate loyalist and probably dislikes any of the yankees he comes across, and likely hates the North/US because, again, he's a racist *beep* and still has pride in the confederacy.

He also had the added motivation to not speak with certain people because of his deal with Jody, but I actually think he was basically straight forward with his feelings and opinions in general. But if he though speaking to Ruth could put him in danger he could still be truthful and dismiss him at the same time.

You may continue on being confused. Good luck.. you'll figure it out..

reply

I'd say people don't fall as neatly into either conservative or liberal as much as the political parties would have us believe.

Seize the moment, 'cause tomorrow you might be dead.

But, there are certain characteristics where you can distinguish one from the other.

reply

If you think conservatives support slaughtering anyone, you're an idiot.
