I saw a poster for this where there is a small child standing behind an ape... is this series going to become child centric?

It seems the child is Nova, as a reference to Beneath the Planet of the Apes, but as a little girl who has lost the ability to speak (or apparently think) properly. In fact, this affliction is hitting all humans at this point.

Yeah, this is a very mature series that deals with a lot of adult topics. I don't see it turning child centric anytime soon.
