Performing above expectations at the box office!

Despite mixed reviews from both critics and audiences, Murder on the Orient Express is performing above expectations.

The film, which was predicted to bring in right around $20 million domestically, give or take a couple of million, finishes the weekend with $28.2 million domestically and $85.4 million worldwide. This is on a $55 million budget.

According to reports, nearly 50% of the audience falls into the over-50 demographic.

Personally, I think that while the film could've been better, it's still a good film and a worthwhile watch. I gave it a 7.5/10 overall.

I'm happy to see this one doing well. I know Branagh mentioned in an interview that if it makes money, we could see more Christie adaptations on the big screen. I hope that's the case!

It’ll have some big competition in the next few weeks, so I wonder if it’ll have staying power. But obviously it is doing really well right now, so that’s nice to see.

A point made in some of the articles I read was that most of the people going to see MOTOE are older--the majority are over 35 and nearly 50% are over 50--and that often times older people can be a bit slow to get out to the theater.

So unlike a Marvel movie, where the superfans all want to get out and see it opening weekend, it could have legs and continue to perform fairly well in the coming weeks. I guess we'll see.

Apparently 20th Century Fox is pleased:

“This opening gives me great optimism for the future of the motion picture industry,” said 20th Century Fox domestic distribution chief Chris Aronson, beaming this morning. “The film’s performance shows that people with the right vehicle will come out to see a theatrical motion picture: It’s a Hollywood movie — big stars, sumptuous moviemaking, an actor’s piece; that’s what is heartening about the whole thing.”
