Not a fan of supe movies, missed the last dozen or so in the Xmen franchise. So what was it that made them near xtinct? And what happened to Magneto?

Xavier allegedly killed all the mutants due to having some sort of emotional outburst? Well we will never fully know all the details because they literally left it out. I am all for keeping various elements of a film's past mysterious for viewer yet this definitely was a huge issue with the film because even for the mega fans who have seen every X-Men and Wolverine film it's very confusing. Not to mention the timeline since this film makes it that 'The Wolverine' 2013 is canon despite 'X-Men: Days of Future Past' 2014 supposedly retconning it.
I don't think most of Wolverine 2013 is Canon.
