Am I the only one who this scared the crap out of?

Like here I am sitting in my room, scared to even get up and go the bathroom because it's pitch black outside and it's "night" in the house (there's very few lights on inside, and yes I could get up and turn them on, but that's besides the point). This movie infected me to my core...I mean just the concept of being followed around by something is horrifying. It's an unknowable thing (that makes it even scarier), and it eventually catches up to you (holy crap). It's that eventuality that makes it so scary.

I watched it back in 2015 and here I am in 2017, still scared s***less of the concept of it.

I own this, probably watched it a dozen or so times. Netflix added it at 3am so I just started it again, this terrifies me. Not many films do. It's just CREEPY. I've always been a huge 'Dawn of the Dead' fan, I prefer slow zombies etc... There's just something disturbing about impending doom, especially when it's unrelenting. This film captures that better than any I've seen in quite some time. IMO, great horror contains a few elements... Subtext, a great score and imagery that stays with you long after viewing. This has one scene after another that I can't shake. It's fantastic

Exactly.

Other movies have tried this--I mean technically you could argue Friday the 13th, Halloween, etc. are like this, but they don't capture this like this movie does, since it's a *supernatural*, *unknowable* force...knowing about Jason or Michael takes their mystique away.

Even as I type this, I'm imagining some unknowable force--in the guise of a naked female--to be walking up my stairs to get me. Oh god, that terrifies me. lol

Well, the first 2 and especially the original 'Halloween' did a great job, as it's one of my favorite films, not just Horror... And 'It Follows' uses those as huge inspiration. The Widescreen, Panoramic Shots, the Suburban Landscape, the Electronic Score etc. One example is the Wheelchair Scene, it's just like the scene in 'Halloween II' when Jamie is on the stretcher. The Camera is attached and we feel their isolation and helplessness. It's brilliant. I love homage, especially when it's not a rip-off. And while 'It Follows' uses plenty of "Tropes" so to say, it still maintains plenty originality. It has some Carpenter, Romero, Argento and Kubrick to name a few... Mostly the first 2. You just never feel safe and that's definitely what gets me. And just to add, I know it's not for everyone but 'The Witch' terrified me as well. Absolutely my favorite horror films in a Long Time.

Yep.

I think that's what made the opening scene so effective. The young woman is offered help and she doesn't even accept, resigned to her fate. Even though we know nothing about the danger, we know it's impossible to fight.

reply

Well, I don't startle easily. Nevertheless, this movie is a decent example of "less is more". It kind of lets the audiences' imagination do the work. Old school horror.

reply

Yes, sir, indeed. It's that imagination that keeps me up at night. :P

reply

I thought it was pretty creepy too. I also liked how much it felt like watching a horror movie from the 70's.

You really need to start checking out Japanese horror flicks. This film doesn't compare to the stuff that can leave you looking behind your back for days if not weeks.

To see or not to see that is the question...

I'm sure they're creepy but as I said, *this* had me looking behind my back for days if not weeks (if not years).

reply

I would doubt years, but plenty of Japanese horror movies that will remain embedded in the back of your mind for the rest of your life.

It Follows employs the same stuff that makes J horror scary: fear of the unknown and impending doom. In any case, it's not a competition: this is a thread for people like me who this also scared the crap out of.

I saw this film in 2015 and now it's 2017 and I still look behind my back once in a while

This movie is quite similar to Japanese horror. It was pretty atmospheric, the curse is passed along by seemingly mundane means, and it's eternal, the monster was unbeatable, with no real conclusive happy ending possible.

Good horror can come from anywhere. The US has made good horror and Japan has made some clunkers, and the US has made some bad horror and Japan has made some great ones. It just seems a bit odd to say this movie compares unfavorably to typical Japanese horror, when in fact it contains a lot of elements that make Japanese horror good.

reply

Does it really matter which country it's from? Just because it's not from the USA does not "= good"

I stopped having sex because of this movie. No way some freaky ghost getting attached to this man, or commitment.

I thought it was more funny than scary. I love horror films, but the latest set of "must see" (Babadook, It Follows) have fell flat to impress me.

This movie is very effective at transmitting a sense of dread. Perhaps another movie of the same ilk may interest you. Try to find The Changeling, I think you'll like it. The director cleverly manipulates the audience with languid peaceful scenes interrupted by violent ghastly scenes. It is psychological suspense. It Follows, will long be a clever jarring semi documentary suspense thriller with a very creative plot and tone. I enjoyed it immensely.

reply

The Changeling is a great example. I noted above that I'd add 'The Witch', which is actually my favorite Horror Film is probably a decade or so. At least since 2010. 'It Follows' is next and there are quite a few others that have really got me interested in the Genre again.

reply

The Witch and It Follows are my faves also. a third would be Kill List.

I can see how the music can be creepy to some. It's very gloomy and droning.
