What happened to the calf?

When the group was walking through the dessert, he was still there. Then, when they enter the power-building, there's no calf. Did the writers forgot abut the little guy and he'll just randomly appear, did the group abandon him for good or did I miss something?

Damn, that cow was my favourite character. :( I only remotely like Lois and tolerate Gail.
