4 ways to fix Vinyl

1. Get rid of Kip and the Nasty Bits. The whole thing stinks and Kip is just annoying as hell.

2. Ray Ramono needs to go. I like Ramono and Everybody Loves Raymond but this is a meaty role with some depth and Ramono just can't go there. Cannavale needs someone better to play agains.

3. That person could be Lester. Lester and Richie have good chemistry and one of the best scenes in the show was when Lester was teaching the Nasty Bits about guitar chords.

4. Pull back on the mob influence. I think with Winter leaving, they will do this. Winter kept talking about Boardwalk Empire in his interviews and this show needs to be more Vinyl. Of course the Mob was involved with the music business but it's overdone and that's why they're changing things.

On a side note, I'm glad Bo Dietl's character was killed. He was just annoying. They can find better actors to put around Cannavale. Dietl's not even an actor.

What do you think mob involvement looks like? Go watch Girls if this is too much for you.

You sound like an idiot.

Mob involvement can occur in many ways. You can even have the mob angle as a secondary story that happens to someone other than Richie but he eventually gets sucked into it. Richie then would have only had to deal with the murder and the Police while he spent more time on the Vinyl side of the story.

Again, this is why Terrence Winter and HBO parted ways. HBO said this:

“As we head into the second season of Vinyl, we have decided it is an appropriate time to make a change in the creative direction of the show,” HBO said in a statement to Deadline. “We have enjoyed a longtime partnership with Terry Winter at HBO on projects from The Sopranos to Boardwalk Empire to Vinyl, and we look forward to our next collaboration with him. We are pleased to welcome Scott Z. Burns, executive producer and showrunner, and Max Borenstein, executive producer, as the new team helming the show.

The mob angle will not be so heavy handed in the second season.

I am 50/50 with you

1. Get rid of Kip and the Nasty Bits. The whole thing stinks and Kip is just annoying as hell.

I think what needs to happen is Kip and The Nasty Bits need to be shown as commercial failure and it cause Richie to basically doubt his vision (he staked everything on them and they are barely selling and can't get radio play). You could even have a story in which Richie wants the Bits to do a censored version of Woman Like You but Kip refuses.

2. Ray Ramono needs to go. I like Ramono and Everybody Loves Raymond but this is a meaty role with some depth and Ramono just can't go there. Cannavale needs someone better to play agains.

I gotta disagree Romano was a standout in his performance.

I agree 100% the mob story stuff was not needed (in the flashbacks to the 50's it was needed but by the 70's the mob had very little power in record industry).

OP, I agree with half of your points but I am with hurricane, I liked Ray Romano's performance. He felt like the only likable person on that show besides Lester. I thought he was a standout.

I don't think Kip is going anywhere soon since he's Mick Jagger's son. But I liked their storyline because it gave Richie a reason to pursue his love of music and not sell the company. Also, Juno Temple's storyline is mixed with the Kip's and she's one of the better characters on the show.

Agree, the mob influence needs to be pulled back. Hopefully, the new writers can release the company from the mob and focus on the music.

One last thing they need to do: Show Richie being in control of his company, focused and being smart despite the setbacks. The Richie they showed in the finale was way more interesting than the Richie who was out of control, coked out and wasted and didn't seem to care about his company. He said he was passionate about the music but he didn't act like it.

I'm really surprised that Winter wrote Richie that way when Nucky on Boardwalk Empire was always in control and that's what made BE a good show.

What second season?

The wise guys run almost everything. They fucking OWNED The Four Seasons and every other performer whose name ended in a vowel. Who the FUCK do you think invented Payola?!

reply

Ramono is one of the best parts of this show and it's probably the best acting he's ever done. The mob influence has to stay as it was a big portion of the industry. They could lighten up on it a little. I don't have much of a problem with kip and the nasties aside from Richie polishing them up so much.

reply

No Dietl played that character perfectly. Loud mouthed and aggressive. A music industry enforcer and fixer.

reply

Probably another reason he was killed off. According to his Wikipedia page, he's running for NYC mayor next year. It's a win/win for everyone....

reply

The show was just too far gone and too expensive. It was a smart move to cancel this.

reply

The first thing they need to do is renew for Season 2.

Oh wait...

Agreed about the Nasty bits - weak part of the show.
Ray Romano was quite good though.

I think Cannavali's descent into addiction and loss of everything (if that's what they're going for) should be more gradual, he unravels on every episode & gets himself together for a few minutes at most. It's exhausting and gets tiring after a while. Also, I noticed that the show started getting interesting towards the end & tbh I would rather see a more sober & in control Richie rather than the coke head version.

I also like Ray Romano btw & don't think he should leave.
