Oh, the American accent!

Rose Leslie, from Aberdeen, Scotland. Harry Threadaway, from Devon. But of course they have to speak American; no kid will go watch this forgettable movie if they had a normal British accent. So grating to see actors ruining their (considerable) charm by having to meow and drawl.

This is just another typical American bashing thread, I'm shocked you guys gave him 2 pages of quality posts.

Yes Hollastar! You are absolutely correct. This is a movie, they hired the actors they did, who did a very good American accent (I myself did not detect any meows or drawls, although I could detect a couple of things off a bit in some words they spoke not true to American accents of any kind, but nothing major by any means). These actors were not forced to take these roles. I have seen both in different British roles (Penny Dreadful and Downton Abbey) and they are fine actors, who were able to stay doing British roles if they wanted to. These pissing contests, usually started by British folks, gets a bit old.

They're actors you know. They are making an American movie you know. They are supposed to be Americans in this movie you know. You might want to take it easy with your eternal conflicts with the American accent/grammar/vocabulary/the way the Americans open their mouths and speak English- that ruined your proper English. Just leave it for the American tourists or bitch about it in a newspaper column or something.

I'm Scottish and I had no idea they were not American. They sounded fine to me.

I'm American and even I couldn't tell. Their accents are flawless. I had no idea Rose Leslie wasn't American. I've only seen her doing the American accent.

I've seen things that would make you want to write a book on how to puke.

What does this mean?

Her voice was very raspy I don't generally like raspy voices, she needs some tea or something.

reply

she's portraying a french canadian woman who's married to an american man, that should cover any flaws in her accent
