Oh, the American accent!

Rose Leslie, from Aberdeen, Scotland. Harry Threadaway, from Devon. But of course they have to speak American; no kid will go watch this forgettable movie if they had a normal British accent. So grating to see actors ruining their (considerable) charm by having to meow and drawl.

Whatever accent you have would be naturally horrible...to go with your disposition.
Tip: Don't watch movies made in America, Einstein..

I fear that my point isn't coming across. Yes, it's been done a million times. Entire dramas have been re-shot for America (David Tennant sounding Scottish in UK BROADCHURCH and American in US BROADCHURCH? Why?)

Oh no, wait, there is one instance where Brits can keep their accents.
When they are action movie villains.

I rest my case.

I was amazed when I heard her real voice, after her accurate North English twang in Game of Thrones.
She's speaks completely differently:-

...a middle-class London accent!

So she's good at accents.

Harry was fine, but Rose was terrible. Her acting after the sleepwalking really took a nosedive.

reply

What the hell are you talking about Rose did a great job and this movie was very good. A little slow to start admittedly but it really picked as the movie went on. The acting was great, the movie was great, and I enjoyed it a lot.

their accents are excellent, but that's not really what you're complaining about.

im unsure why they didn't just change the setting to somewhere in the UK and not put on accents but i imagine it has to do with how films are made. first there's a script and a director and a producer and if all that came from the US then the actors probably auditioned using american accents. either way, the difference seems small enough. as an american i would have liked to hear their normal accents because i enjoy hearing scotish/irish/english/aussie/south african accents as do most americans that i know of.

regardless of all that, no kid will watch this movie anyway, it's essentially 2 actors in a confined space for 1 hour and change.

the movie is rather good, by the way.

I'm an American and I agree with this^ statement. I have always admired the U.K. and thought it was in many ways ahead of the U.S.

LOL what? The poster deleted the comment to which you responded to but I can only guess what he wrote. Healthcare? Brits being more 'cultured'? Plus you sound like your typical actor fanboy. In this regards to Rose Leslie.

i'm American and i thought their accents were fine. i honestly don't understand what some of you guys are talking or hearing. the movie was meh...but their accents were totally fine.

reply

I don't think the accents were that bad honestly but I don't understand why they would cast 2 Europeans for the movie in which the characters are American.

reply

Yea, that's the weird part. But once you think of it it sort of makes sense.

Both leads aren't A-list and probably wanted to make a thriller/suspense movie where they were the stars - not a big budgeted one but one that supposedly was more serious in order to help their filmography. Just by their casting I can tell that certain scripts are reserved for any one of the "tiered" acting levels (A-list, B-list etc.). This was reserved for actors at their tier level.

Both actors are known mostly for the tv roles and this script being a "slow-build up suspense" whose content isn't all that sophisticated was the ones available to them. Plus add in a few weeks pay in America so they can go visit the US of A.

It's not a kids movie by any means, but I seem to recall hordes of American kids going to see Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and Star Wars all of which are loaded with non-American accents.
