shareI am a Rathbone fan...but Brett was very good also.
RME
Those who study history are doomed to watch others repeat it.
Have you seen Basil Rathbone as Holmes? He really is good. Brett is far too nasty. Cumberbatch is fun, but just a bit too silly for Holmes. But my favorite Watson is undoubtedly Martin Freeman.

Have you always been clueless, or is it a recent development?
shareThere's only three actors that can make a believable claim at the top spot for potraying Sherlock Holmes: Sean Connery, Sidney Poitier and Paul Reubens.
End of Discussion.
I've enjoyed all the incarnations of Holmes as he is such a good character.
And much like Dr. Who, you never forget your first Holmes.
. . . The Bones tell me nothing.
You MUST be joking! Either that, or you've seen no other portrayals of Holmes on screen. Cumberbatch, in my opinion, is unbearable to watch in anything. Repulsively ugly for starters, which does not bode well for a successful screen career. Now I know there are many visually impaired individuals who find him appealing, and I pity them. Such low aesthetic standards must make for a dismal life!
Well, of course, I'm being facetious in the last two sentences, but I do find BC so unattractive as to be impossible to watch. So I have no idea if he's good as Holmes or not. Despite the fact that I am a massive Holmes fan and have watched and read and listened to (all BBC radio adaptations) I am, sadly, unable to watch this latest series with this guy in the lead role.
His television and film career success truly baffles me. If I have to sit and look at someone for an hour or two, please make him someone pleasant to look at (at the very least)! I just hope he goes away soon because I can't take it much longer! :D
As to the topic of this thread, Jeremy Brett was brilliant, and I also enjoyed Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce as an amusing team. I am looking forward to seeing Sir Ian in this particular film. Anyone, really, but that Cumberbatch bloke!
