R rated sex themed movies with no sex and no nudity

I mean, what is the point of this?

I don't understand why you would make a movie where sex is the central element of the plot, have it be R rated, and then not have any real sex scenes or nudity to speak of.

I understand watering down a film to get a PG-13 rating, but what's with this weird trend over the last decade?

During the 90's sex based R rated movies had LOTS of hard sexual content, as you would expect. Erotic thrillers were a big genre, and teen sex romps, etc.

But now we've entered a world where you have movies like "Sex Tape" and "Sleeping with Other People", both rated R and both largely centered around sex, with absolutely no real sexual content.

I'm not expecting porn or anything, I'm not expecting it to be Fifty Shades of Gray, but it feels weird and lifeless to see a movie ABOUT sex and hear the characters talking about sex for 2 hours and not include any actual sexual content.

Do you mean for this movie or sex type movies in general?

I ask because there were a couple of sex scenes in this one. Not sure if we saw different versions.

To answer your question - I suppose it depends on the script, taste, what they creators want to convey. Sometimes sex can cheapen or subtract where dialogue and character interaction will suffice or bolster the story.

There are many answers to your question.

I think strong sexual themes and language and violence, (not in this movie)gets an R rating.

Characters had sex several times. You're mad because you didn't see boobies.

I didn't wanted to duplicate my answer by copying it into a similar themed thread here, so I do it here.

What has changed is the requirements for the rating system. It doesn't matter who the director, the producer or writer is.

The key element here is, as it can be read in the parents guide, one has to choose, what activities can go in there to keep an R-rating. It has been pointed out by many, that a film can have a lot of violence and curse words, and remain PG-13. What is considered racy is sexual and drug themes, use one more *beep* than allowed, it's an R, throw in a few sex scenes under the influence, it's an X, which everyone wants to avoid.

For whatever reason the MPAA thinks kids with parental guidance totally can handle just any violence and profanity, but a joint or anything beyond first base is too much for them. It's messed up, but that's how it is. Until then, European movies are more what you look for in this regard.

there were PLENTY of sex scenes in this movie, so that's not an accurate criticism. however, i do agree it was almost awkward how much sex there was, with no actual nudity during those scenes. the comment i made to my wife while we watched it was, "this movie sure has a lot of 'clothes-still-on' sex."

There's so much free porn now that it's not really so vital to have nudity in a mainstream movie anymore.
