My Sharona Is From The 70s

The song "My Sharona"(1979) in the trailer is from the 70s. Ooops.

For the fall of 1980, I think "My Sharona" is pretty much right on point.

If the movie took place in 1979, but they played a song from 1980, then you'd have a point.

Exactly. The fact that 1981's Urgent by Foreigner is played was an issue. But My Sharona came out in 1979.

That's like saying that a radio station would never play Can't Feel My Face today because it came out last year.

I started college in 1979 and I remember the girls of my freshman dorm singing "Good Girls Don't" from the same Knack album as "My Sharona" and right before xmas, the freshman boys were blaring Springsteen's "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" over and over again out the windows. A lot of girls also listened to Dan Fogelberg, which I couldn't stand. Not sure what year those songs came out, but they were big at my college in 1979/1980.

I was only 12 but I remember that most 70s acts were still popular and their songs were still played well into the early 80s. It wasn't really until 83-84 that I remember the more recent acts elbowing out the older ones.

Songs just stayed around longer back then, and didn't disappear in a month or so like they do now.

I was in the 10th grade in 1980 and the US Navy Marching came to our high school to play. We were all like "who wants to hear a marching band" but the first song they played was "My Sharona" and the whole assembly went wild. It was definitely popular in 1980.

Not unless you think rounds funny

I had a rock hits compilation album called "Rock '80" back then, this was the first song on it. It was released in late '79 but went wide in 1980. Not that it matters, any song could be on the radio in 1980, as long as it was not released after the time period.

What's really interesting musically about this movie is how it shows this time to be the junction between the end of disco and the blast off of new wave and 80's rock.

A good time capsule of how the late 70's and early 80's really intermeshed is the movie Nighthawks (1981). Filmed in 80 it shows how it was still solidly 1979 in many parts of the US.

I hope you're trolling.

That's not even funny.

So was ZZ Top. This might be a news flash for ya, but classic rock plays old repeats frequently. Back then it was just called rock of course.

So was the Pat Benatar song.

But yes, in a movie set in 1980 it's not odd that we'd hear a song from 1979. That's not a goof. A good would be if they played a song from 1981.
