My Sharona Is From The 70s
The song "My Sharona"(1979) in the trailer is from the 70s. Ooops.
share1979 is more 80's than 70's musically.
My name is Darth Jar Jar. Master of the Drunken Force technique. All of you will be my slaves.
A song from 1979 is what people in 1980 would be listening to so not sure how you see that as not being a correct era period song?
shareThey could have picked a better "80s" representative song than "My Sharona".
shareMy Sharona was a huge hit song in late 1979. It was still a hit in early 1980. It was only months removed from the events of this film.
shareI remember it was early 79. It was my senior year in high school and I remember not liking the song.
shareSo in fact your argument has nothing to do with the film-makers getting the period song wrong, it's just that you did not like My Sharona? I hope it doesn't ruin the movie for you. I really loved that song so I think I'll thoroughly enjoy this movie when I eventually get to see it. Have fun!
shareThe fact that I don't like that song has nothing to do with the argument. My post was about the song not coming from the time period the movie producers say. It's a fact.
Btw, the year 1980 is technically part of the 70s. The 80s don't really begin until 1981.
Why are you being ridiculous.
In the fall of 1980, a teenager would be listening to a hit from 1979.

My Sharona is one of the first hits of the New Wave genre that dominated the 80's. It's an appropriate song to use.

"New Wave" did not dominate the 80s. It started about 1976 and waned about 83/84.
shareMore stuff by The Cars. Also, The Police.
Not sure if they used it in the film, but Billy Joel's 'It's Still Rock n Roll To Me' was HUGE during the summer of 1980. Great song too.
As far as I can recall, it was still getting play in 1980. But nowhere near the amount it had in late 79.
That summer of 1980 Funkytown, Cars and Call Me were the big hits. Clearly My Sharona was already showing signs of being from a different era in only a matter of months.
Seriously, how dumb can the OP be? College life isn't a radio station that only plays the current Top 40. The music in the movie reflects what the kids would have been playing in their cars and on their stereos, which naturally includes albums of the prior few years. BB keeps saying it's not "80s" enough, as though people in 1980 should have been in possession of music from the entire decade they had yet to live through. Put down the bong, dude, you're thinking muscles have atrophied.
shareBecause immediately once it became 1980, no one was allowed to listen to songs from the 70's??? Is that your logic?
shareHere is a new concept. How about people just enjoy the movie? Why do so many people only look for fault and try to be negative? Never ceases to amaze me that some people spend so much time looking for fault instead of just enjoying the movie. Oh well
