A song from 1979 is what people in 1980 would be listening to so not sure how you see that as not being a correct era period song?

Btw, the year 1980 is technically part of the 70s. The 80s don't really begin until 1981.

It's really not. What would make you think that a hit song in 1979 wouldn't be big in 1980? That's probably the dumbest thing that I've ever heard. There are big hit songs from last year that people still play like crazy now. That's pretty accurate and true to life.

My Sharona is one of the first hits of the New Wave genre that dominated the 80's. It's an appropriate song to use.

"New Wave" did not dominate the 80s. It started about 1976 and waned about 83/84.

Not sure if they used it in the film, but Billy Joel's 'It's Still Rock n Roll To Me' was HUGE during the summer of 1980. Great song too.
As far as I can recall, it was still getting play in 1980. But nowhere near the amount it had in late 79.
That summer of 1980 Funkytown, Cars and Call Me were the big hits. Clearly My Sharona was already showing signs of being from a different era in only a matter of months.
Seriously, how dumb can the OP be? College life isn't a radio station that only plays the current Top 40. The music in the movie reflects what the kids would have been playing in their cars and on their stereos, which naturally includes albums of the prior few years. BB keeps saying it's not "80s" enough, as though people in 1980 should have been in possession of music from the entire decade they had yet to live through. Put down the bong, dude, you're thinking muscles have atrophied.
