paved over and forgotten....

one will note how this movie is already in the bargin bins, forgotten, not playing anywhere, no body cares anymore....

the future history of a movie tells if it is GOOD or not - do people want to rewatch it, buy, view it streamed etc, and I run the halls of Science Fiction - well, any good movie really - and this pile of rubbish is never mentioned, never suggested, just no one cares anymore. It is nothing.

Sure, there's a couple of people who enjoyed it, but every movie wants to be a hit with an audience.

it's quite clear NOW, that this wasn't.

there are lots of excellent movies that get lost to history...

watch A Personal Journey with Martin Scorsese Through American Movies (https://moviechat.org/tt0112120/A-Personal-Journey-with-Martin-Scorsese-Through-American-Movies) for several examples...

James Gray's earlier movies are really good, but they are also mostly overlooked by movie culture... The tend not to be the type of fun adolescent movies that inspire exchanging quotes like Goodfellas or Pulp Fiction, nor are they virtue singalling movies like the ones the Oscar crowd like to mention... Also, they don't fit in with nerd culture, which is the dominant culture currently... These aren't superhero movies, or based on IP... there are no cool monsters or special characters... just flawed human being trying to deal...

His movies are more melancholy and speak to more contemplative side of masculinity... Movies like The Lost City of Z, We Own The Night and Two Lovers aren't a fun watch for the family type movies.. but they speak to themes not usually covered in lighter, more popular movies... they'll never be popular movies, but they're excellent... hidden gems...

I wouldn't count it out yet. Sci-fi films can be surprising.

2001 and The Thing was widely panned soon after release.

Many go on to have a strong cult following.

Although personally, I have no desire to see this movie again, but because it somewhat unique (sci-fi nerds love unique) I don't see this movie headed to oblivion anytime soon.
