Why did the Murphies have only three children?

Shouldn't their birth control always fail because of the curse?
Even sterilization is not 100% effective. So, logically, the
couple should have a bunch of kids.
Do you think they had sex only when they wanted to have kids?
Or did Miss Murphy have an abortion every few months?
