Why is no-one touching David Koresh and Timothy McVeigh?

Everything else gets a movie/mini series except the two halves of America's most important
internally defining story. Season one Waco. season two Oklahoma. Cults, guns, polygamy, sovereign citizens, cover-ups, manhunt, 60 minutes interview, lethal injection and music blasting sounds like a must do. What am I missing?

I don't know why - but I never found either story particularly particularly interesting. I probably wouldn't watch a mini-series on either of those subjects.

People are fascinated by celebrity, show-biz and/or glamor. The Simpson murders had all of those. Plus, OJ was a celebrity already. People may be put off by "celebrating" cult leaders and political extremists in a mini-series.

reply

OJ Simpson was a minor celebrity. It's the racial aspect and the perfect storm that was LA in the early 90's that blew it up into a huge story. Do you know how many rappers, athletes actors and socialites have been tried for murder in the same name recognition league as OJ? At least a dozen, and I cannot tell you much details about any of them.

Because the Koresh story makes the federal government look bad (they murdered a bunch of women and children) and the OKC bombing is another narrative filled with holes.

reply

SpikeTV is actually doing a mini-series about David Koresh called Waco starring Taylor Kitch as Koresh with Michael Shannon as an FBI agent.

As the title says.

reply

Those children were dead the day they were born. Sorry to have to say that, but just like the children at Jonestown, Waco was no different. Most of those children too were Koresh's. He was going to take them with him no matter what.

reply

...or not!

reply

not mention the OJ trial was one of the longest and biggest trials of the century

reply

They should do one about Jim Jones. That would be interesting to watch.

Choose life. Choose a job. Choose a career.

reply

A movie or mini series abut Jim Jones?

Lara Croft Himiko! The First Sun Queen! This is Yamatai.

reply

I don't know but I'd totally watch it.

I think what you say is really on-point, ilykyu, with one amendment: I think it's actually a *three*-act story, with the first act being Ruby Ridge. That's the event that heralded the rise of armed militia and segregationalists, and profoundly influenced both Koresh and McVeigh, as well as shaping the attitudes of the FBI. Many of the FBI agents at Waco had themselves been at Ruby Ridge. It's really quite integral to the overall story that came to its horrible end in Oklahoma City.

But I suspect one reason it hasn't been given major network treatment is that all three events are still awash in controversy and contradiction in their stories; it would be almost impossible to do without being accused of taking sides, probably by both sides at the same time. ;-)

When Versace ended I was pondering what would be next and I thought Koresh would be perfect. However, it might not be sensationalized enough. It needs to be celebrity, so perhaps Robert Blake?
