Watching episode one after having read the book decades ago when it came out.

As a kid, the book was good. The world of the book is much different from both the previous series and this series, but they are all sort of fantasy of the East from a Western viewpoint.

This new series not so compelling, or maybe I just don't care that much or view our modern media as simplistic and cartoonish. There is no way this series deserves above a 9/10 rating. That's got to be fake.

One thing I notice in a lot of our movies and TV now is how the characters try to channel moviestars of the past. In this case it just hit me that the Blackthorne character is trying his best to sound like Richard Burton the famous old Welsh actor who died in 1984.

He's not doing a bad job. It's hard to follow the continuity of the series and the characters. It could be better but surprised I am going to continue watching for a while.

It gets worse too. The quality dropped in Episode 6 and 7. I have no idea where they are going because it's not even James Clavell's Shogun at this point.

I'm on episode 5 right now, I really liked episode 3 a lot, and 4 was good too. But I can't really say one way or another how good or bad this is yet, I need to finish it. So far I would probably give it a 6.5 out of 10. We'll see how it plays out. I haven't read the book, so I can't really compare it. I might have to read it though...

I was kinda hoping that the story took place during the old Shogun era but this is actually about 50-100 years later. Still, not a bad show in my view.
