I hope Begbie's dead. What a despicable, violent creature.

Kay: Senators and presidents don't have men killed.
Michael: Oh, who's being naive, Kay?

reply

Nope and that's a great thing. Begbie and Renton are the main characters in the book, wouldn't work without him.

reply

So you don't want a "despicable and violent creature" in the movie, yet you quote Michael Corleone?

oh thats what all that bullshit is!
the unseparated sigz of imdb are still haunting me :(

reply

He's in the book so he will be in this, incidentally, there's a new Irvin Welsh book out called 'Blade Merchant' about none other than the man himself.. Irvin & Robert Carlyle just finished a mini book tour to promote it.

reply

Love Carlyle. Bagbie doesn;t have a single redeeming quality. Would you let him watch your 2 years old daughter?

reply

Begbie is VERY MUCH ALIVE

Here he is on Trainspotting 2 Set

It's "The Blade Artist", but yeah, it's a great book. Begbie's been in about 5 of his novels so far. Great character.

Begbie would be a horrible person but as it's only a movie, he is a great character! In my opinion, he was one of the many high points of the first movie.

reply

He's very selfish, extremely violent, suspicious of his friends. He's a dirtbag with not an ounce of likability. Maybe he has his moments. But why he has friends is a concept beyond what is shown in the first film.

Kay: Senators and presidents don't have men killed.
Michael: Oh, who's being naive, Kay?

reply

I know what you mean lol

I've worked couple years in a pawnshop and what I could say that might be a glimpse of the answer you're looking for is that shady, loser and needy people get together in some way or others. They surround themselve with their kind and use and abuse each others. They drag people down and block each other ways for their own good. Renton is on his way up at some point in the movie, move in a different city, find a job etc. When happen when his friends come back in the picture? Yeah, exactly.

So Begbie most have some positive points. Maybe have contacts for drugs or else, always have plans to make some money and the others follow because they are in need and with low self-esteem and see Begbie as a confident figure. Anyway they probably find him entertaining !!

Hi,

I really recommend reading the books.

I would read them in the order they have been written. I would also read the books that are linked.

They add a lot of background to the whole story and if the characters have interested you in trainspotting you will enjoy them.

1993 Trainspotting
2001 Glue (introduces some characters which are in porno)
2002 Porno (in some ways a sequel to trainspotting)
2012 Skagboys (a prequel to trainspotting)
2015 A decent ride (not really linked but a great read, with one or more characters from the other books).
2016 The blade artist (set mostly after all the others (I guess) about Begbie)

Some characters were also in Irvine Welsh's short stories, I can't remember which.

reply

Yeah I know I should read this book !! They will passed by my hands sooner or later. Thank! The Blade Artist... about Begbie??? LOL I feel like I would read this one first! Would it hurt?

reply

It wouldn't make much difference if you read blade artist first. But it would be better to read them in the order they were written.

To fill in a few things, Rentboy appears in 'ecstacy', I also think this is referenced in the main ones.
Juice Terry is in 'If you liked school you'll love work'.
Begbie is in 'marabou stork nightmares'.
Ewart and Lawson are in 'Reheated cabbage'
Ray Lennox from 'filth' is the main character from 'Crime'

... and I'm pretty sure there are many many more...

reply

I think the scenario is as a Psychopath Begbie's just too indifferent and scary to say "no" to. Especially Renton and his crackhead loser chums, would they stand up to him? I don't think so. So, to keep safe (and alive) people just let him hang around. And it's known psychopaths like him keep weak people around to manipulate.

reply

I've known guys like Begbie. If you can not challenge them as tough guys but at the same time figure out how to not be afraid of them, you can sometimes gain their trust.. It's like owning a giant, badly trained dog. It won't listen and will trash the furniture, but for the most part it will maul anything that gets in the way.

reply

OP Michael from the Godfather is a violent despicable guy to, but he's a great character, the same here applies.

reply

esb90, I think for different reasons.

One is a thoughtful character, much like his father, able to lead a violent force and lead an organization to make a lot of money and the other is also a leader but with a very thougtless violent tendency for the sake of violence. All due to his selfish nature. A comparison but their natures are very different.

So he's NOT dead. DANG!

Kay: Senators and presidents don't have men killed.

reply

You get a glimpse into Begbies world in the 2nd film. I find myself feeling sorry for him and the awful life he had. He's also a closeted homosexual and has all the anger from that as well.

reply

Wow. I would not have expected that. The other guys did have GF's in the first film. But Bagbie did not. So, that could make sense.

It does open things up a bit more.

reply

He actually has a wife and son in the second film!

reply

I was hoping the same thing! I hated his character in the first movie & couldn't understand a fucking word he said. He was useless IMO.

reply

I'm from Glasgow and we all know a "Begbie", as much we all think he's a wankre, there are times that he will come into his own and be the one man that you hope is standing beside you in a fight.
