apparently flemish people spoke french lol

perhaps nitpicking, but that downed English pilot in episode 3 was suppose to be in flandres, yet the peasant family spoke french among each other.pretty unrealistic, also as a peasant girl her age fluent in English lol.
all very very unlikely and unrealistic.
non the less enjoying the show

reply

Yes, they do. The official languages are Dutch and French.

reply

True, but in Flanders the predominate language is Flemish, a Dutch dialect.

BTW, German is also an official language of Belgium.

reply

Yes, I know. 3 languages. German is the third. Dutch or Flemish in Flanders. I regretted responding to this because I haven’t seen this movie and op might be right. Speaking French might just be out of place.

reply

Im a Flemish, so im well aware of the linguistic situation of my surroundings lol.

in the series a scene starts mentioning clearly they are in Flanders, and start to follow a downed British airman.
he bumps on a young peasant girl. she starts to speak in french to him, but crazier is later she addresses her father as well in french.

so clearly they're not a Flemish family.

now one episode further, still the majority of the Flemish speak french lol. in that time if they would be noblity or high elite it would make sense, but peasants and common people not a chance in the universe.

around that time Flemish nationalism was trough the roof

Did you like it?

Flemish is not truly a "dialect" of dutch, Flemish is officially not even a language but a culture.
Flemish people officially also speak dutch. it just have different accents and certain words and expressions are totally different but its not a dialect deviation, it is dutch.

same like British English and American English .same but some cultural differences

reply

...it just have different accents and certain words and expressions are totally different...

Hence, it is a dialect.

reply

so US English, is a dialect of English then... its exactly 100% the same situation

reply

To say US English is a dialect is incorrect.

There are many dialects in American English just as there are many dialects in British English. Still more world wide.

reply

so dutch has no regional dialects in both Flanders and Holland mr expert? LMAO

anyway thx for confirming you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about and validating the case for dutch and English is exactly the same

reply

so dutch has no regional dialects in both Flanders and Holland mr expert? LMAO

I said no such thing so you can pick your ass up off the ground now. I said Flemish is a Dutch dialect. You said it was not but by your own description of Flemish it is.

You make absolutely no sense. I don't think you understand what constitutes a dialect.

reply

what you don't seem to comprehend is that dutch and English are the exact same situation, yet,
you regard the dutch spoken in Flanders as a dialect and the us English not, while the circumstances are one and the same.

and both nations having their own regional dialects both in the English as the dutch language.

you are for 100% not a dutch speaker i can tell, why i find it even more remarkable you apparently know it all better.
the very definition of an arm chair expert

reply

Going back to the original point of this exchange...

I said Flemish is a Dutch dialect. You disagreed.

But Flemish is irrefutably one of several dialects of the Dutch language.

You now seem to be agreeing with that.

As for US English, you don't seem to understand what I am saying. You attribute to me ideas that I have not expressed and your arguments make absolutely no sense.

You are right about one thing, though. I am not a Dutch speaker. One the other hand, your comprehension and writing of English are also very poor.

reply

Oh no, my writing in my 4th language is not perfect. How many languages do you speak? And how perfect are you in the ones not your mother tongue? Learn first another language, then come back judging.

My point remains and never got deviated how flemish is not a dialect.
And the comparising with English stands like a rock.

It's the same langue spoken in both countries, Mr language expert.
West Vlaams, Brabants, Antwerps, Utrechts, Amsterdams these are all dialects of Dutch. Flamish is a culture of a region. Not a dialect.

But i know in your head you'll know it all better with your extended real life international language experience.

Fucking lol

reply

Flamish is a culture of a region.

Took you long enough to answer. And you can't spell either.

And Flemish is a dialect.

reply

Says the expert only speaking English to a native Dutch speaker

reply

Belgian people are always French-speaking in Hollywood, but this is truly idiotic.

Wees blij dat ze geen Nederlands spraken, anders had het net zo slecht geklonken als die onzin in Oppenheimer.
