Anime similar to Attack on Titan

I liked this... so I wonder if there are some Anime Series that have: mystery (suspense), philosophy and mind games). I've watched Code Geass, Death Note and Gantz... is there anything that can be put in the line with this tree (four with Attack on Titan). Thanks.

reply

You might like "Another". Kind of a horror/mystery series. Mostly serious throughout.

reply

Thanks, i've started "Ergo Proxy", "Another" will be next on my watch list. :)

I'd say 'Claymore' is somewhat reminiscent of Attack on titan as it is also set in a detailed and consistent medieval fantasy universe. It's a rather well-known and well-received anime among the general anime crowd.

reply

my thought was Claymore as well. I even prefer it.

reply

the qualities you describe are quite rare in shounen. the greatest mystery/philosophy/mind games show i've seen is Monster, but that is very much grown-up fare. Texhnolyze and Durarara have these elements, perhaps give them a go. Paranoia Agent is another, it's pretty 'out there.'

none of those are action-heavy or as laden with (unnecessary, imo) dramatic monologues as AoT though.

ah, i just remembered: i thought Casshern Sins had a very similar atmosphere of desperation, great action, and underlying philosophical elements. but it's quite light in the 'mystery' department, and leaning more towards sci-fi tragic hero. not for everyone but i loved it.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is the only similar anime, it's basically the blueprint for all inspired animes (Rahxephon, Eureka 7, Attack on Titan, ect.), however if your looking for something medieval look no further than Berserk!

reply

Yes Berserk is the best. I just hope it will continue.

reply

Watch Berserk

Every where i go i'm Walken'

reply

Definitely in agreement with Berserk. Same level of violence, same kind of era-period, deals with the concepts and themes of fear and strength, and the manga gets all steam-punk like AoT

reply

and the main characters, Guts (Gutsu) and Eren, in both shows are very similar.

Every where i go i'm Walken'

reply

Evangelion and Berserk are the first that come to mind.

reply

Same level of "hey!--this show isn't finished!"

You'd feel cocky too if you were full of myself.

reply

I agree. Berserk is just as good and has extremely powerful characters.

reply

i would heartily recommend Darker Than Black: set in th modern day it deals with shadowy assasins with strange powers, and an underlying mystery as to the origins

Also, Wolfs Rain is a beautiful story, its about wolves that are disguised to look like people, the series is like a road movie that passes through a series of fables

AND LASTLY i'd definitely recommend Baccano! Its a densely plotted steampunk mystery, with great action and well written characters that stick in the mind, dealing in mysterious forces and psychotic killers and set in a few different periods (but the 1920's feature heavily) - and it's also one of the few times i've ever enjoyed the english dub over the japanese, the actors characterisations are just spot on

Happy Hunting

It's simple, Watch Higurashi BOTH SEASONS or else you won't understand anything cuz it's not just a dramatic masterpiece but also a complete *beep* that will leave you feeling stupid..
It's based on an amazing visual Novel By the astonishing writer Ryoukishi07
And no it's not a blood lust fan-service as it might seem at first..

reply

hmmm..so you're in the market for a thoughtfully crafted anime, which provides action, suspense, mystery, whilst at the same time invoking the audience to seriously ponder deeper, existential philosophicalquestions?

I would highly recommend Boku no Pico.

reply

haha, that's EXACTLY what i'm looking for! Thanks

I remember watching an Anime called Speed Grapher. Very interesting theme and is full of mystery. It has a similar level of violence and maturity to it too. Has anyone else seen it?

reply

The story had a nice creepy vibe to it, but I thought the animation quality was pretty low which made it hard to thoroughly enjoy it.

reply

Yes I agree. Do you know any similar anime to speed grapher? I've seen claymore, beserk, hirugashi and darker than black. It seems there aren't many recent Animes on the list?
