Cate B deserved the Oscar. She was wonderful. I think Meryl could've played this were she that age. I also thought of another Aussie, Judy Davis. I think she would've nailed it perfectly as well were she that age. I thought of her role in Woody's Husbands and Wives. She plays neurotic great. Probably Kate Winslet, as well. Anyone else?

Whilst watching this, I kept thinking that if this was made in 1993 instead of 2013, Streep would've played Jasmine.

Cate Blanchett was simply amazing in this role, but I agree that Judy Davis (probably 10-15 years ago) could have played this really well. Cate had so many of Judy's mannerisms that I actually had to check IMDB to make sure that wasn't JD in the movie! Watch "Naked Lunch" (1991) and compare Cate in this role to Judy as Joan Lee/Frost. It almost looked like Cate was channeling Judy's performance in some scenes.

shareYes indeed, Joanna Lumley in her Patsy role from Absolutely Fabulous would turn this into a sensational comedy.
In fact every time Jasmine helped herself to a drink it reminded me of Patsy! Somewhat destroyed the drama of the movie for me.
