To tell you the truth...This film really doesn't need a sequel it is fine as it stands without bringing in a new Godzilla.

It's better if they take their time to craft a good narrative with good characters.

No need to take their time. They could start making a sequel right now. The question is which monster should appear. It could be Rodan, Gidorah, Gabera, Rodan, Megalon, Ebirah, Mothra, MechaGodzilla, Gigan, King Kong and a few others. Who cares about the human characters in a Godzilla film.
