Yes. We know slavery and black history id an important part of American history. But every other episode come on. Their are countless immigrant groups who contributed to America and their Descendants deserve to have those takes told also.

I completely disagree. I found tonight's episode detailing the ancestors of Keenan Wynn, Maya Rudolph and Shonda Rhimes to be extremely interesting. All of the guests had their ancestry traced back into southern slavery, but there were so many variants in their stories. Keenan Wynn found out that one of his ancestors was actually kidnapped OUT of slavery, but chose to return because of the strong ties he had to his family. That was a story I never imagined hearing, but it really pointed out the depth of family ties and feeling.

Where do you ever hear these kinds of stories? Not on Masterpiece Theatre, not on tv shows, rarely in movies. I personally want to hear more.

Agreed 1000%! All this info is fascinating to me.

Keenen Ivory Wayans. Keenan Wynn used to play Disney villains.

Thanks for the correction! Wayans is what I meant:)

Gates is a Professor of African-American Research at Harvard.

Sounds like the show "Who Do You Think You Are?" is more your speed.

He's done plenty of European and Asian guests. He's even made African American celebrities look at their white ancestry. So its not just about slavery.

reply

If your going to have a black guest - you are going to run into slavery. No way around it.

reply

You are going to run into slavery even with many of the white guests as well.
Many of their ancestors were slave owners.

reply

I agree. But I think exploring the slavery angle is the show’s raison d'etre.
