If you didn't already see it in my topic, this is my summary of how and why I believe an actual Prometheus sequel was ditched in favor of this movie:

I find that Ridley managed to make Covenant a very symbolic movie. Even the name implies that this movie is nothing more than a contract (synonym of covenant) between Ridley and Fox... But the symbolism is quite interesting.

Prometheus ended with Shaw leaving to find out more about the Engineers. That was the storyline... And what exactly happened? We see David (a soulless machine) DESTROYING the Engineers, the core of the Prometheus storyline. Yes, it is symbolic of the true storyline being destroyed, and we only see it in flashback, thus it happened long before Covenant even started!

The other part of the Prometheus storyline, Shaw... She was also destroyed by the soulless machine long before Covenant started. Everything Ridley wanted to do with the story, he had to destroy, and he shows it to us, we get to see the soulless heartless machine destroying everything about the Prometheus story just to make way for a generic Alien movie.

It's a message from Ridley: "I was forced to do this. It's all because of a covenant/contract I have with Fox, a heartless corporate machine. I'm sorry."

I like the opening too, and the flashback of David bombing the engineers. Beyond those, I thought it was horribly dull. The action scene trying to defeat the xeno on that platform ship as it flew, that was well done at least.

It was an interesting premise that didn't go anywhere.

The idea of going to the Space Jockeys home planet was to learn more about them and why they wanted humanity destroyed. Instead we are given a horror/drama/character study, the latter of which doesn't start until we meet David.

The film was well put together but on any deeper level was nothing more than a contrived mess that didn't have a purpose. Every character beyond the androids were so irritatingly idiotic in everything they did it just became impossible to hold any sense of disbelief, and by the end we're literally left with no character development at all, to the point it becomes apparent you're simply watching a slasher flick in space, and not a very good one at that.

It was just one idea thrown into the next, contrived yet entirely predictable, and just became irritating to watch. Extremely disappointed with it.

This is almost my exact exclamation upon finishing this film. Except it was "What the fuck Ridley Scott!?"

All of these people were idiots! Spaceships just blow up. Robots grow hair. Even on Earth people try not to step on spores... And that's just the silly nit-picky stuff.

And I kept wondering, since when is Alien about God? Since when is it about robots trying to find meaning or what-not? I though that ground was covered by Blade Runner. Is Ridley confusing his movies?

This was a big budget pseudo-philosophical slasher. It does nothing to continue Prometheus /I wasn't a big fan, but some continuity would be nice/. It does nothing to build upon the original Alien/s. It does nothing to be a stand alone, original story. And it just does nothing.

Blah, is my review in short.
