Most recent series, episode 6...language

In this particular episode I noticed that the word ‘sex’ was used a heck of a lot.
I don’t recall it being used so much.....and I thought it was a little odd for this word to be used in such a historically set show. I know they are not portraying 100% realism, but just thought that it grated a bit with the whole aesthetics. I mean, shouldn’t they have been saying ‘lie with’ and stuff like that instead?! It would make it more believable for me.

Actually, sex wasn't a taboo during early Middle Age (even late Middle Age), specially in pagan societies, as the Viking one. The 'lie with' sounds more like Church or after-Renaissance stuff.

The three main gods in the Viking pantheon were Odin, Thor and Freyr. Nowadays Freyr has been dismissed somehow. Why? well, Freyr was the God of peace, fertility, and love, and he was usually represented with a huge erected penis, so guess...

Thanks for your reply.
I didn’t mean that sex was a taboo I just mean the actual word. Perhaps it is a misconception in my head that it seems quite a modern word. Lie with I have just as an example. There are lots of different ways to say ‘have sex’. Perhaps it would have seemed better for me for them to say the F word, I don’t know. Just my opinion for that episode. The main thing is that I don’t recall any other episode using the word so much, even though there can be a lot of sex in episodes!!
I completely agree with the use and portrayal of sex and fertility and erect penises and all that in worship and iconography. Again, that was not an issue for me, but thanks for the time to bring it up.

I would expect those savage Vikings to use a more vulgar term, such as the F word as you mention. To me the expression "have sex" always sounds a little too technical/clinical when they say it in this show.

Yes, agree, that’s what I mean.
