He's driving away looking at her in the mirror as she runs, assuming she's just wanting to keep him in sight as long as possible as he leaves.

Every time I watch it I get a dread feeling that she had changed her mind and wanted to stay with him, I seriously wanted him to stop and make sure.

A heart-wrenching scene in any case, in a heart-wrenching movie.
