I don't get the sequence with the bomb. The crystal was activated by the radiation in the scanner so I get that part.

What is the in-movie explanation for why it didn't just blow up in the enclosed elevator all the kids to kingdom come?

I think it only does a concentrated blast, not a normal explosion. In the elevator, the blast went straight up. On the ship, the blast cut the ship in half.

Doesn't really make much sense, but that's the best I could think of. Other than plot-armor.
