So was the Michael Keaton character sort of the same hero he played in Birdman? I mean he was a villain here, but the character was pretty much the same as the one from Birdman. It was really clever if it was purposely done, even though many viewers don't know the movie Birdman.

But answer to your question, Birdman is to Riggan's character is closer to what Batman is to Keaton as an actor, rather than the "bird" in Spider-man. It's more just a fun sort of in-joke than a direct connection.
