So...again with 3 villains??

Wow, you would think they would learn their lesson after 5 movies; two of them failing miserably (arguable with ASM 2) and now that sue-happy Marvel has gotten their way and rebooted the character yet again, now they are having 3 villains in one movie which is one of the main reasons (and the main complaint among viewers) that ASM 2 and Spider-Man 3 failed. I know there were many other flaws beyond there being three villains that caused the movies to bomb in the eyes of the fans, but that was the one complaint we never heard the end of even years later from disappointed viewers. Now with Marvel controlling the helm without Sony on their back as much after the lawsuit, Marvel is doing the same damn thing Sony did that caused viewers to be pissed and give the main reason for the two biggest movies of the two last Spider-Man franchises to fail and require reboots. If this movie doesn't go well what with Marvel, Sony, and especially the fans blame it on for the most part? Too many villains? Most likely.

Now I enjoyed ASM 2 and Spider-Man 3 more than many others did, and I'm not saying three villains was the main issue with either of them. It's how they were handled in the story, and also the ridiculously bad cuts/edits to the final films, especially ASM 2. But I'm hoping this movie will learn from the past mistakes and deliver an epic movie without there being yet another disappointment and having "too many villains" again be the fans' main complaint.

Repeating my post from various other threads

The amount of villains in a film do not matter, it's how they're used. Spider-man 3's problem was that none of the villains were connected and they were all over the place. Villains ultimately need picked to compliment the story, not distract from it. That is why certain villain combinations work (because they actually make sense) and others don't. What works? Electro and Sandman, Lizard and Kraven, Venom and Carnage, Vulture and Shocker, Vulture and Sandman etc. However Sandman and Venom do not. Same thing pretty much goes for Goblin and Electro. Rhino doesn't even count for ASM2.

The only main villain in this film is Vulture. Literally every other villain is nothing more than a henchman. The only one that needs to be focused on is Toomes. Shocker will probably be just a grunt villain like Crossbones in Civil War. He's never been a big Spidey foe with a grand scheme or anything. Even in the cartoons he appeared in he was mainly working for a big crime lord. And Tinkerer has never even been a physical threat to Spider-man and will likely only be in for tech support.

Its amazing how people hang around message boards of movies they dont like

I'm sick of people acting like Rhino was a big part of that movie. He was just a cameo at the end

reply

Alexsi was a villain in the first act and returned as the Rhino at the end.

reply

His role in the film was still nothing more than a cameo though. Didn't even become Rhino until the very end after the main plot was over and the movie ended just as Spidey started to fight him.

If people are seriously gonna count characters that had pretty small roles in the film as villains, then they might as well count the burglar in both SM1 and ASM1, Joe Chill and Zsasz in Batman Begins and The Scarecrow in The Dark Knight.

Rhino sucked so much I can't keep it out of my mind when I think about asm2. I feel like he played a big role in the film. Worst villain ever.

Vulture - Big Bad

Shocker - Opening Villian or nothing more than a Henchmen

Tinkerer - Tech support

Logan Marshall Green - Villain role TBA

I only count one true villlain possibly 2

Let's not forget Michael Mando, who was rumored months ago to be playing Cletus Kasady. I want to be excited for this film, but so far the casting choices are questionable (Was Jon Watts higher than a kite when he casted Flash Thompson and Ned Leeds?) and the simple fact that Tony Stark will be in this scares me a bit. THIS is Spider-man's movie not Iron Man's, who by the way is the only character who seems to get the spotlight judging by the fact that Robert Downey Jr. gets paid millions of dollars compared to his co-stars and his acting is the same cheesy one-liners *beep*

If the movie is written well enough then the number of villains shouldn't be an issue. Guardians of the Galaxy had four, Batman Begins had three same as this, and the Dark Knight had an entire supporting cast of villains.

What's missing in movies is same as in society: a good sense of work ethic and living up to ideals.

Three plus another three equal Sinister six.

Easy math folks!

thats true

Multiple villains isn't the problem.

The problem is when they do multiple origin stories with the villains when they only need one or none at all.

The problem with ASM 2 was the 2 origin stories and the poor pacing of the film in which there was too huge a gap with no action.

reply

Agreed. Villains don't need origin stories, they hurt the pacing. I like how the Joker was introduced in TDR as already THE Joker, instead of the boring origins of Two Face: bla bla.. talking.. bla bla.. more talking.. Boom! Two Face. Which died 15 minutes later. Yawn.

I hope someday Marvel or Sony would redeem themselves by doing Venom right.

My friend and I always joked for years about them having The Tinkerer as a villain in a movie, can't believe it's actually happening. They should have used Spencer Smythe instead.

But as for how many villains, I agree with those saying that The Vulture will likely be the only "Big Bad" and the others will probably just be supporting roles.
