Back in the 80's there wasn't gay porn widely available, whereas Hustler did feature male nudity so it is entirely plausible he derived erotic stimulation from viewing it. Also, since Hustler was principally a heterosexual oriented magazine, it would be suitable for a person not wishing to arouse questions concerning their (same) sexual preference.
