Why would anyone tell Ceclia anything?

I'm in America(California)and love the show, scenery is amazing.

That being said, Cecilia is an awful person. I'm now watching Season 2, she just spilled the beans about Gillian having an abortion. She does this on purpose, says things that she shouldn't share and than acts all innocent.

Now Alan has just told her about how Eddie died right after this incident with Gillian being upset with Cecelia.

Who would do that?

reply

To be fair Jac, Alan is married to Celia. Celia is his wife. He was determined not to keep any secrets from Celia and felt that he should tell her the truth about Eddie's death. 

I think she only assumed that it was common knowledge about Gillian's abortion among Alan's family. I don't think she did it on purpose. It was a genuine slip up on her part and she was sorry about it, wasn't she?

I'm no Celia fan either but I sorta did forgive her for this. On the other hand, it is Gillian who I have a real issue with in the series (Nicola Walker is amazing though).

I love the show too!  I binge watched (easy enough to do) the series DVD's borrowed from my library and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Thank for your reply. True, they're married, but they were just married.

And you know what happens when you "assume"? She didn't know Robbie, as Gillian said who repeats information like that to people they don't know. She could have just said Alan and Gillian had a falling out, of course that wouldn't make for as good of a show.....LOL.

Just saw the episode where she refuses to go to the Caroline's wedding, she isn't a very nice person. She does a lot of "how was I supposed to know" instead of a sincere apology.

There are people in life, who are "s**t stirrers" they get a kick out of causing discord. We all know them, and she definitely has those traits. Doesn't mean she is completely evil, but she does enjoy drama.

I think it is because he knows they don't have a lot of time (given they are both elderly) and so wanted to lay all his cards down, right from the start. I understand where Alan is coming from. He wanted to get this marriage right.

And you're right of course. Celia is as flawed as Gillian and Caroline. They all have their faults as a typical dysfunctional family does.

LOL. The age-crutch excuse! Grrr. 

I found her behaviour to her sister quite frustrating as well. I mean, it's not like she stole her husband at the time or something. 

Given that she reads the Daily Mail, it is not surprising really, is it? 

I've been asking this question for a while now! But not just about Celia (granted, she is the worst) but all of them! Not a day passes but Gillian confesses something to someone. She clearly has a lot of repressed guilt, despite acting like a pirate most of the time and saying she doesn't regret things. I forgive her, though, since she had such a rotten life with her first husband. I hope she never makes the mistake of telling Robbie what she did to him!

Maybe she got the confessing bug from her dad? He does lots of confiding in people, not just Celia. John is always emoting and Celia seems to live in the past, always talking about her husband's infidelity.

Has anyone seen the show "Particularly British Problems", a tongue-in-cheek look at British manners? If you're British, they say, you're not supposed to go around divulging personal things like this!

-Those we should know elude us. But we can...love without complete understanding.

Celia has undergone a change for the worst since series 2. In Series 1, she was a bit full of herself and quite insensitive to anyone's problems but her own, but she saw her flaws and tried to make amends when she realized that.

Since then, she's been a terrible person to everyone and sure, she feels sorry... or she pretends to, when the shit hits the fan or if Alan is concerned. She doesn't care about anyone else.

I don't think Celia's a bad person, but from someone of her age I would expect better judgment about revealing such personal information, especially something as sensitive as abortion. I do think she fails to grasp just how much pain she has caused. I think you're right, she has become more self-centered than she was at first. Oftentimes I think it's because it took her so long to find real happiness that she just wants to revel in it, knowing their time together may be rather short, thus has little patience for others' issues. I don't think she intentionally sets out to hurt people, but the fact that she doesn't acknowledge the degree of damage is problematic. She needs to keep her mouth shut - but that doesn't make good drama, does it?

I've only seen the first three series so far, since the Christmas specials haven't been released on DVD yet, so I don't know if anything changes - I suspect not.
