[spoiler]So, basically, they give up the American dream and way of life to go back to the stinky Soviet Union where they'll probably either be killed or wind up working in a mule glue factory and only able to buy bread once a week if they're lucky. As far as any intelligence agency is concerned, they are nothing but washed up failures. If it had been me, I would have defected and gotten into the witness protection program. Sure, I may be tracked down and killed, but at least in the meantime, my life would be better than that of being in the USSR.[/spoiler]

Yeah - Philip gave up the spy life, lived "the American dream" and almost went bankrupt. They saw no future in the US. And Russia, even though it went through bad times, had people living normal, happy lives.
