Seeing This Today - Preparing Myself for Disappointment

My buddy and I are seeing this movie this afternoon, and I fear the worst. I've heard a lot of meh-ish feedback about the film. Afterlife was really good, so I had high hopes for this, but now I'm prepping myself for Ghostbusters 2 level crappiness.

Just got out of seeing it myself and yeah it’s really disappointing and a massive step down from Afterlife.

Just such a shame, this is a fantastic IP and I can’t believe how slapdash the whole film was.

I came out with the opposite opinion. I liked it even more than I did Afterlife. What didn't you like about it?

I just thought it was unfocused, poorly paced and didn’t have as many laughs as Afterlife. The subplot with Phoebe befriending a ghost was good but there were just long stretches of the film that I found to be quite boring.

I like Ghostbusters 2 though so we also disagree on that haha. Really wanted to like Frozen Empire but it just didn’t click with me unfortunately.

I liked that more attention was paid to individual character growth and storylines than in past Ghostbusters films. Usually it's more of a "here's a ghost, let's get it" plot, and not much else happens. This time there were parallel storylines, and a more serious tone throughout, which may be what resulted in fewer laughs on your part?

The family dynamic was interesting, as Paul Rudd tried to fit in as a father, and Phoebe's angst was well-portrayed. It would have been easy to go overboard with the latter, or rely on the same overblown tropes, but instead they kept it believable. I found myself laughing throughout, though I can't recall if I was laughing even more at Afterlife. I certainly enjoyed that film as well, though I couldn't tell you anything that happened in it now that I try to recall it.

The original is still by far my favorite, and yeah, I definitely disliked the sequel. Even the 2016 reboot was better than that one in my opinion, though not by much.

Yeah I think that's another thing is it just seemed quite forgettable even if some of it was enjoyable. It just seemed to take a long time to get going and then the ending felt really rushed. Glad you enjoyed it though and I do hope it does well at the box office as Ghostbusters is a fantastic IP and I would like more films. I might give it a rewatch in the future and I might like it more, maybe I did go in with too high expectations.
