But "G'day, mate" is purely Australian.
They are known for saying that. So when an American says it, thinking they are doing an impression of an English person, it is pretty embarrassing.
I'm pretty sure Sal was joking, like pretending to be super ignorant to where he was, hence him going 'eh?' to the camera right after. Sort of like Q having to play dumb with the fella in the bar about American history.
