How many of those trashing talking actually went to see it?

Look, I get it - I'm a huge fan of the original too. When I first heard this was getting remade I rolled my eyes like everyone else did.

But then I went to see it - in 3D - and it was one of the most amazing action movies I've ever seen. A visual master piece.

Sure the acting is a bit 2D (as it was in the original) and some of your plot lines will be slightly altered - but the ragging this movie is getting from the general public is just not fair IMO.

This movie stands alone from the original for the first surfing scene alone.

I saw it. It is not very good. True, the stunts are very, very good, and the cinematography (huge waves, sweeping mountain vistas) is pretty breathtaking. However the main problem is that it takes itself WAY too seriously for what amounts to a pretty hokey plot. There is also very little, to any, character development or insight into the minds and emotions of the actors (case in point: the female love interest).

I loved the original even though it had many flaws. I figured this remake would suck but started thinking that maybe it would translate well into a modern story.

Wrong. Saw it. It was wretched. Completely devoid of the soul the original had. I gave it a 3/10 only because the surfing scenes were great, the cinematography was good, and I enjoyed the deaths.

The whole "healing the Earth" thing was its vapid attempt to appeal to the modern low-information-voter. This is what it substituted for character depth.

The cherry on top is the way that there was an instant MTV dance party suddenly at very remote locations. We laughed out loud at how bad this movie was.

Looked great in 3d but that's about it.

Characters and plot elements are recycled for fan service and there are unnecessary plot extensions.

Why does it matter that Utah is his "youtube" name???? Couldn;t he have just been named johnny utah??

reply

I enjoyed watching it, but it had some serious flaws. They tried to put a new twist on the original plot, but they branched out too far and the plot became a mangled mess.

But, I thought that the action scenes and settings were awesome. It was fun to watch, even if it didnt make much sense.

reply

You need to watch better action movies.

reply

Yeah. This is what you have these days, an audience out there that's ready to trash every movie. They watch movies ONLY to look for plot holes, nitpicks, and irrelevant inconsistencies. They're the, "Oh, look at me rip this movie to shred because I'm a fan of _____" crowd.

Every movie has that group.

You sure you didn't accidently watched the original again?

This film was one of the worst action films I've ever seen and looked horrible with it's murky blue filters.

The plot made no sense and lifted stuff from other 90's film (the tragic beginning from Cliffhanger, the barechested underground fight scenes from Fight Club, post bank heist shoot-out from Heat)

There was no sense of fun, everything was overly serious and pretentious.

There's no chemistry what so ever between any characters. Also there wasn't one likeable character in the film.

You could start a fun drinking game any time Bracey yells "Bodhi" in his whiny voice.

Teresa Palmer's character added nothing to the plot, whereas Lori Petty's was important in the original.

There was no sense of excitement or awe during the extreme sports scenes. Compare those to sky diving scene in the original, that one is still exciting.

Bradey is Hemsworth wannabe, looks likes Chris but has the charisma of Liam (maybe even less)

One of the most iconic scenes in the original is laughable bad in this one.

I've never seen so many ugly tattoo's in a film.

And I could go on for awhile.

Its funny cause most of the holes you're pointing out here are the same holes that most people poked fun at for the original for years and years. Bad acting, shooting a gun in air, Keanu bopping his head around. You name it, people rolled their eyes at it.

Its only now that the re-make came out that the original has become some treasured masterpiece for some reason. I'm tempted to use the word Hipsters - but I'll refrain.

That's mostly why I'm calling shenanigans on this. Everyone now sticking up for the original that they never did before, simply because its all of a sudden become "cool".

The herd has spoken, I guess.

Utter nonsense. There has always been a devoted following for this movie. You can't just decide that there wasn't. A remake reminds the fans of the old great. Being a fan of the original does not require daily flag waving. Surely that makes sense to you.

Plenty of Keanu haters point out his acting in all of his movies but his style actually worked in Point Break. That is the bulk of any former detraction made against the original. Solid film. Very well directed and the actors pulled off quality human connections in an over-the-top action movie. Uncommon achievement. Something completely missing from the rickety remake.

It is fine that you like this new one. Hey, I like old Godzilla movies. If throwing around the "hipster" accusation makes you feel better about your tastes in film then pitch away.

I think you should read my list of complaints again then. And sure the shooting a gun in the air is a bit silly (but not any sillier than a guy jumping of an exploding building with a firehose or a bus jumping a gap in a freeway) but it works in context of the film, unlike the remake where it feels it was added as an afterthought.

Sure, the original has it's detractors but overall it's always been well received. Just look at the score it has here or on Rotten Tomatoes. It's definitely an iconic 90's film with a couple of classic scenes. If you were to ask people to list their Top 10 90's action films, I'm sure at least half will include Point Break in it.

I went to see the remake with my girlfriend who'd never seen the original. She thought the new one was okay. The next day we watched the original. When Gary Busey's Pappas was introduced she said: "Wow, this Pappas is way funnier and cooler". After the film was over she thought it was a disgrace they called the new film Point Break.

And the use of word Hipster would be more appropriate for the remake with it's pretentious and brooding Eco warrior villain. And you are the one that is praising a film that's both commercially as well as critically a flop, so who's the Hipster here?

That's mostly why I'm calling shenanigans on this. Everyone now sticking up for the original that they never did before, simply because its all of a sudden become "cool".

The original has always been one of my favorite films and has always been well loved by a lot of people. So no, it's not all of sudden cool to like Point Break '91.

The original will be referenced for years to come, the remake on the other hand is just another terrible remake of an iconic film and will be forgotten this time next year. And Bigelow went on to become an Oscar winning director, Core should be happy if he ever gets to direct another film.

Anyway, this is stimulating, but I'm out of here.

I'm not what you call a fan of the original Point Break but at least the original had its entertaining moments and was a well made yet hokey and cheesy film that had a spark of life to it that you would pop in on a rainy day and have a fun time.
I can see why Hot Fuzz referenced it.

The difference between the original and the remake is night and day.

The fun of the original was drained out along with most of the colors,
the pacing was poor, the plotline didn't hold up and the tone was way too serious.

The 3D, the action scenes and digital cinematography did manage to salvage the whole movie but the movie was just flat out terrible.

There was someone on this board who loved it and thinks this remake is actually a well made, good movie.

Yes, this!!!

I'm not interested, but I'll check it out, just for the scenes in Canaima. Maybe it surprises me.

I love the original personally. I tend to watch it whenever I catch re-runs airing. It's not the best movie, but it has its own soul. The best way I can describe it is like catching up with an old friend, as there's something very comforting about it.

With that said...

I almost felt compelled to see the remake and it was disappointing.
The stunts were cool, some of them even breathtaking, however this did not make up for lack of plot, character development and or the inexplicable absence of relationships. That was the whole basis of the original. They grew very fond of each other in a relatively short time. There was even a love story that had relevance to the plot. Bodhi & Utah didn't fight each other because they wanted to, but because they had to. Bodhi even steps in at one point and helps Utah out of a jam when he sees him about to get gang-beat. Spoilers ahead. At one point in the new movie Utah tracks Bodhi and his crew to London, follows them into an underground fight club type of environment where they confront him, kick his ass; later smoke a joint together and then invite him to go backpacking in a different country the next day. Wait, what?

This movie might have been OK had they not named it Point Break or had the same character names as in the original, and actually spent more time developing relationships and story instead of just jumping from action sequence to action sequence. 25 years later, the original still trumps this film in a huge way. I will say this, however...I was seriously blown away by both the base jumping & cliff climbing scenes. I was literally on the edge of my seat.
